Abstract:
Methods and apparatus for extending the transmission range of a UTOPIA ATM (or packet) interface include providing two UTOPIA extension devices, one for coupling a PHY layer device to a transmission cloud and one for coupling an ATM layer (or LINK layer) device to the transmission cloud. Each device includes a UTOPIA interface emulator, a link controller, and a media transceiver. The media transceiver can be made to support various media such as a backplane, copper cable, optical fiber, or a wireless medium. The UTOPIA extension device preferably includes a UTOPIA inlet buffer, a UTOPIA outlet buffer, an inlet clock decoupling buffer, an outlet clock decoupling buffer, and a flow control module. The UTOPIA inlet and outlet buffers are used for traffic management and the clock decoupling buffers allow the UTOPIA interface emulator and the link controller to operate in different clock domains. The link controller provides error control and backpressure delivery to support flow control.

A method is disclosed in this invention for designing an optical polarization analyzer for measuring a state of polarization (SOP) of an optical signal transmitted over a particular range of wavelengths. The method includes a step of selecting a corner cube having a specific input medium refraction index and comprising four triangular surfaces and attaching four optical detectors on each of the four surfaces for sequentially absorbing and then reflecting an incident light from one detector to a next detector wherein said incident light is within the particular range of wavelengths. The method further includes a step of selecting a coating to coat over each of the detectors disposed on each of the four surfaces by selecting a coating material and designing an accurately controlled thickness of each of the coatings for controlling a absorption/reflectance ratio for each of the detectors whereby an optimal sensitivity of photopolarimeter is achieved.

A gain flattening and tap device. A gain flattening filter for use in fiber-optic communications includes a substrate. A GFF film is formed on a first surface of the substrate. An HR film is formed on a second surface of the substrate. The HR film is arranged to receive light from the GFF film and to reflect at least some of the light back through the GFF film. By passing the light through the GFF film multiple times, the effectiveness of the GFF film is multiplied. Further, by constructing the HR film to allow portions of the light to pass through, a tap may be implemented with the GFF.

A dual fiber optic amplifier uses a single pump source for two or more optical power amplifiers. Erbium doped fiber amplifiers for dense wavelength division multiplexed (DWDM) metro area optical networks may be configured as either high gain amplifiers or power amplifiers. The erbium doped fiber type, length, and pump power level are selected so that the shape of the gain spectra is approximately the same for single channel or multi-channel operation.
