Valve With Noise Reducing Two Stage Pressure Drop

View page
US Patent:
54172446, May 23, 1995
Filed:
Feb 7, 1994
Appl. No.:
8/192263
Inventors:
Herman W. Behrens - Rancho Palos Verdes CA
Wendell L. Gilbert - Pleasant Shade TN
George M. Harpole - San Pedro CA
Jane M. Lin - Rancho Palos Verdes CA
Michael F. Wolff - Torrance CA
Assignee:
TRW Inc. - Lyndhurst OH
International Classification:
F15B 900
US Classification:
13762523
Abstract:
A valve for controlling flow of hydraulic fluid. The valve includes first and second relatively movable valve members (60 and 62). The valve members (60 and 62) include cooperating surfaces (112, 142, 144) which define first and second orifices for metering fluid from a pressurized fluid source (44) toward first and second locations (22 and 24) in a fluid utilization device (12). The valve members (60 and 62) have a displaced position in which the first orifice is increased in size and the second orifice is decreased in size. The increased size of the first orifice reduces a pressure drop across the first orifice. The decreased size of the second orifices increases a pressure drop across the second orifice. The valve members (60 and 62) include means (114 and 146) for increasing a pressure on a downstream side of the second orifice to reduce the pressure drop for controlling valve noise.

Steering Control Valve With Different Size Flow Gaps For Noise Suppression

View page
US Patent:
55621244, Oct 8, 1996
Filed:
Feb 21, 1995
Appl. No.:
8/391236
Inventors:
Hermann W. Behrens - Rancho Palos Verdes CA
George M. Harpole - San Pedro CA
Jane M.-C. Lin - Rancho Palos Verdes CA
Michael F. Wolff - Torrance CA
Wendell L. Gilbert - Pleasant Shade TN
Assignee:
TRW Inc. - Lyndhurst OH
International Classification:
F15B 1304
F15B 910
US Classification:
13762523
Abstract:
A valve (10) for controlling flow of hydraulic fluid. The valve (10) has first and second valve members (80, 82) which have a plurality of lands and grooves. The valve members (80, 82) are relatively movable from a neutral position to a displaced position in which surface segments (202, 226, 208, 218) of respective pairs of lands overlap to form flow gaps (232, 234) for restricting flow of fluid between respective pairs of grooves. At least one (234) of the flow gaps is divergent by having a cross-sectional flow area which increases along a direction of fluid flow and at least one (232) of the flow gaps is convergent by having a cross-sectional flow area which decreases along a direction of fluid flow. The flow gaps (232, 234) have minimum cross-sectional flow areas (A, B) defined by the surface segments. The flow gaps (232, 234) are sized such that the minimum cross-sectional flow area (A) of the convergent flow gap (232) is larger than the minimum cross-sectional flow area (B) of the divergent flow gap (234) for suppressing valve noise.

Countermeasure Apparatus For Deploying Interceptor Elements From A Spin Stabilized Rocket

View page
US Patent:
62794825, Aug 28, 2001
Filed:
Oct 31, 1997
Appl. No.:
8/961900
Inventors:
David P. Smith - Pacific Palisades CA
Jane M. Lin - Rancho Palos Verdes CA
Assignee:
TRW Inc. - Redondo Beach CA
International Classification:
F42B 1260
US Classification:
102374
Abstract:
There is provided a countermeasure defense system against hostile missiles by employing non-explosive intercepting ("NEI") elements 14 deployed by the spin stabilized rocket 10. The NEI are carried in a payload section 17 and contained by a sleeve assembly 16 which is removed by a drive mechanism 20 or a pyrotechnic device 152 after a countdown time delay programmed into the trigger release assembly 46 as controlled by the control unit 150. The drive assembly includes a drive rod 26 that is releasably held by a release assembly 46 a compressed coiled spring unit 30 drives the sleeve assembly 16 forward exposing the payload section 17 to the centrifugal force of the spin stabilized rocket propelling the NEI elements out from the rocket at constant angular velocity creating an interceptor cloud of elements. In another embodiment the pyrotechnic device 152 detaches the shearable screws 170 that secure the payload section 117 from the rocket engine housing 102 thereby setting the sleeve 121 free from the rocket housing 102.

Steering Control Valve With Contoured Control Surfaces

View page
US Patent:
52594130, Nov 9, 1993
Filed:
Aug 27, 1992
Appl. No.:
7/936135
Inventors:
George M. Harpole - San Pedro CA
Hermann W. Behrens - Rancho Palos Verdes CA
Michael F. Wolff - Torrance CA
Jane M. Lin - Rancho Palos Verdes CA
Assignee:
TRW Inc. - Lyndhurst OH
International Classification:
F15B 1304
F16K 11076
US Classification:
13762524
Abstract:
A valve for controlling flow of hydraulic fluid. The valve includes a valve sleeve and a valve core. The core is disposed within the sleeve. The core and sleeve are relatively rotatable. Each of said core and sleeve has an axially extending land and an axially extending groove. The core and sleeve have relative rotational positions such that the lands overlap to define a flow gap for flow of hydraulic fluid from the groove in the sleeve to the groove in the core. The flow gap has a minimum cross-sectional flow area adjacent to the groove in the core. The minimum cross-sectional flow area constantly varies as the core and sleeve relatively rotate. The land on the sleeve has a notch immediately adjacent to, and downstream of the minimum cross-sectional flow area which provides an abrupt increase in cross-sectional flow area for suppressing valve noise due to cavitation.

A valve for controlling flow of hydraulic fluid. The valve includes a valve sleeve and a valve core. The core is disposed within the sleeve. The core and sleeve are relatively rotatable. The sleeve has grooves connected to a utilization device. The core has grooves connected to a fluid supply and reservoir. The core and sleeve have lands which radially overlap during relative rotation of said core and sleeve to restrict fluid flow from a portion of the grooves in the sleeve to the grooves in the core connected to the reservoir. The lands on the sleeve have chamfered end faces with tapered segments.
