World's Oldest Panda 'Jia Jia' Dies in Hong Kong

Her condition took a turn for the worse on Sunday, leaving her unable to do anything but lay down for the majority of the day. To prevent further suffering, the zoo decided to euthanize Jia Jia, and veterinarians performed the procedure at 6 p.m. local time (6 a.m. ET).

Dubbed the Grandma panda, and the equivalent of 114-years-old in human terms, Jia Jia had reportedly been suffering from multiple geriatric diseases including high blood pressure, arthritis and cataracts on both eyes.

World's Oldest Panda In Captivity Dies In Hong Kong

In recent weeks Jia Jias food consumption had sharply declined from over 10kg (22 pounds) to less than three kg (six pounds) per day and her average weight dropped from 71kg (156 pounds) to around 67kg (147 pounds).

Over the past few days, she has been spending less time awake and showing no interest in food or fluids. Her condition became worse this morning. Jia Jia was not able to walk about without difficulties and spent the day laying down, Ocean Park said in a statement posted on its website.

Guinness World Records recognized Jia Jia as the oldest giant panda to live in captivity. The average lifespan for a panda in the wild is 18 to 20 years, while in captivity it's 30 years, according to Guinness.

Never Fear, Robots Are Here

It might freak you out that Jia Jia is eerily human-like, capable of engaging in light conversation with light facial expressions. From a short distance, you probably couldnt differentiate her from an actual person. This is where things might get weird for some people who fear the possibility that

form being pushed down, or a four-legged, dog-like robot kicked for no other reason than to see how the robot reacts to the sudden and unexpected force, fills viewers with sympathy. Watching a conversation where Jia Jia seems utterly subservient to her creators has even conjured feelings of sexism.

Researchers in China introduce Jia Jia, the 'robot goddess'

According to Xinhua, Chen said plans are in the works to upgrade Jia Jia with artificial intelligence mechanisms that will allow her to recognize facial expressions, among other things. Chen told the news outlet that he hopes to transform her into a robot goddess.

The latest robot to bridge that divide is Jia Jia, hailing from China. Built by a team from the University of Science and Technology of China, Jia Jia can respond to questions, with facial expressions to boot.

Describing Jia Jia as a 'robot goddess', team director Chen Xiaoping said: "We hope to develop the robot so it has deep learning abilities. We will add facial expression recognition and make it interact more deeply with people."
