Method For Optimizing Memory Utilization Of A Selective Call Unit

View page
US Patent:
6420960, Jul 16, 2002
Filed:
Sep 30, 1996
Appl. No.:
08/724568
Inventors:
Jheroen P. Dorenbosch - Paradise TX
Alain C. Briancon - McKinney TX
Assignee:
Motorola, Inc. - Schaumburg IL
International Classification:
G08B 522
US Classification:
340 752, 340 744
Abstract:
A selective call unit (SCU) ( ) is used for receiving a sequence of interspersed message fragments (FIG. ) belonging to a plurality of messages transmitted by a messaging system. The SCU ( ) receives a message length command from the messaging system indicating a total message length of a message pending transmission from the messaging system. Each message fragment includes a message portion of the plurality of messages and information indicating the length of the message fragment. The SCU ( ) then determines whether there is sufficient memory available for receiving the message according to the message length command. The SCU ( ) reserves memory space equivalent to the total message length when the total message length is equal to or less than available memory space, and disallows reception of the message when the total message length is greater than available memory space.

Method And Apparatus For Limiting Message Loss And Message Latency In A Messaging System

View page
US Patent:
6429771, Aug 6, 2002
Filed:
Apr 27, 1999
Appl. No.:
09/300195
Inventors:
Jheroen Pieter Dorenbosch - Paradise TX
Richard Lionel Bennett - Southlake TX
Soeren Henrik Thomsen - Gentofte, DK
Assignee:
Motorola, Inc. - Schaumburg IL
International Classification:
G08B 522
US Classification:
340 728, 340 746, 340 724, 370229, 370314
Abstract:
A messaging system transmits to a subscriber unit ( ) on a plurality of channels ( ) operating concurrently. The system transmits ( ) control information for the subscriber unit on a control channel assigned to the subscriber unit, and transmits ( ) a personal message fragment intended for the subscriber unit on a first channel. The system also transmits ( ) a group-call message fragment that may be intended for the subscriber unit on a second channel. Before transmitting, the system schedules ( ) the transmission such that the probability that the personal and group-call message fragments will overlap temporally with one another and that either of the fragments will overlap temporally with the control information is reduced.

Allocating Antenna-Provided Communications Services

View page
US Patent:
6430408, Aug 6, 2002
Filed:
May 16, 2000
Appl. No.:
09/571185
Inventors:
Jheroen Pieter Dorenbosch - Paradise TX
Assignee:
Motorola, Inc. - Schaumburg IL
International Classification:
H04M 342
US Classification:
455414, 455406, 455407
Abstract:
A communications system having an antenna and at least one mobile unit in communications with the antenna. A price that a mobile unit will pay to receive an enhanced communications service is established. The antenna provides the enhanced communication service to the mobile unit paying the price.

Method And Apparatus In A Wireless Communication System For Retrieving Local Information And Services

View page
US Patent:
6434381, Aug 13, 2002
Filed:
Mar 8, 2000
Appl. No.:
09/520930
Inventors:
Morris Moore - Southlake TX
Jheroen Pieter Dorenbosch - Paradise TX
Assignee:
Motorola, Inc. - Schaumburg IL
International Classification:
H04M 342
US Classification:
455414, 455456, 455517
Abstract:
A mobile station ( ) of a wireless communication system ( ) detects ( ) a predetermined user command applied to a user interface ( ) of the mobile station. In response, the mobile station transmits ( ), to a fixed portion ( ) of the wireless communication system, a message including a request for local information and services. The fixed portion receives ( ) the message, and, in response, determines ( ) the location at which the mobile station is positioned. The fixed portion then generates ( ) A the local information and services custom-tailored to a predetermined area around the location, and sends ( ) the local information and services to the mobile station.

Method And Apparatus For Channel Pattern Based Managing Inbound Traffic In A Two-Way Wireless Messaging System

View page
US Patent:
6434391, Aug 13, 2002
Filed:
Mar 24, 1999
Appl. No.:
09/275658
Inventors:
Deborah Lynn Rutan - Saginaw TX
Slim Souissi - Fort Worth TX
Jheroen Pieter Dorenbosch - Paradise TX
Assignee:
Motorola, Inc. - Schaumburg IL
International Classification:
H04Q 720
US Classification:
455452, 455450, 455518, 340 721, 340 724
Abstract:
A controller ( ) defines ( ) a channel pattern specifying a network destination for inbound channel traffic, a subscriber unit address group to which the channel pattern applies, and a predetermined time interval during which the channel pattern is to be active. The controller transmits ( ) the channel pattern to a processor ( ) which processes received inbound traffic. The processor then manages ( ) the inbound traffic in accordance with the channel pattern.

Method For Transmitting Collision-Free Messages In A Digital Selective Call Signaling Protocol

View page
US Patent:
6469997, Oct 22, 2002
Filed:
May 3, 1999
Appl. No.:
09/301679
Inventors:
Jheroen Pieter Dorenbosch - Paradise TX
Eduardo Guntin - Parkland FL
Assignee:
Motorola, Inc. - Schaumburg IL
International Classification:
H04B 7212
US Classification:
370337, 370348, 370445, 370458
Abstract:
A plurality of transceivers ( ) each include a transceiver circuit ( ), and a processing system ( ) coupled to the transceiver circuit. A periodic communication cycle is divided into a plurality of frames, each frame having a predetermined interval. Each of the plurality of frames in turn is subdivided into first and second portions ( ), whereby the second portion is used by the transceivers for requesting access to a communication medium ( ). The second portion is further subdivided into a plurality of time slots, each time slot having a duration equal to or greater than a predetermined propagation delay of a signal transmitted between transceivers. Each of the transceivers is assigned to a corresponding one or more of the time slots. When transmitting a message from a selected one of the transceivers to a recipient communication device ( ), the processing system of the transceiver selected is adapted to enable the transceiver circuit to monitor transmission energy in the communication medium during a time slot immediately preceding the time slot assigned to the transceiver selected ( ), and if the energy measured is below a predetermined threshold, cause the transceiver circuit to transmit at least a portion of the message to the recipient communication device beginning at the time slot assigned to the transceiver selected ( ).

Method And Apparatus For Motion Activated Control Of An Electronic Device

View page
US Patent:
6529144, Mar 4, 2003
Filed:
Sep 22, 2000
Appl. No.:
09/667341
Inventors:
Robert W. Nilsen - Fort Worth TX
Jheroen P. Dorenbosch - Paradise TX
Assignee:
Motorola Inc. - Schaumburg IL
International Classification:
H03M 1100
US Classification:
341 20, 341 21, 345158, 3405681, 3405687
Abstract:
A method and apparatus provides for motion activated control of an electronic device. The method activates a function, such as a backlight feature, of an electronic device, by storing at least one motion sequence and a function corresponding to each motion sequence. Motion of the electronic device is monitored, and when it is determined that the monitored motion corresponds to a motion sequence, the stored function that corresponds to the stored motion sequence is activated. The apparatus has a motion transducer that senses motion of the electronic device, and a device controller in communication with the motion transducer that activates the corresponding function when a motion processor determines that the stored motion sequence has been sensed by the motion transducer.
