Strap Tension Indicator For Orthopedic Brace

View page
US Patent:
7285103, Oct 23, 2007
Filed:
Jan 7, 2004
Appl. No.:
10/753088
Inventors:
Jeremy J. Nathanson - Vista CA, US
Assignee:
DJO, LLC - Vista CA
International Classification:
A61F 5/00
A44B 19/00
US Classification:
602 16, 2459311, 602 5, 602 20, 602 23
Abstract:
A strap tension indicator for orthopedic brace is provided. Certain embodiments include a strap tab cap that is slidable relative to a rigid brace frame member. As tension in the strap increases or decreases, the strap tab cap slides with respect to the frame member, covering and uncovering various indicator portions on the frame member. Certain other embodiments include a strap tab that is slidable relative to a strap tab cap. As tension in the strap increases or decreases, the strap tab slides relative to the strap tab cap, covering and uncovering various indicator portions on the strap tab and/or the frame member. The strap tension indicator provides positive indication of optimal strap tension. Certain embodiments also provide positive indication of inadequate or excessive strap tension.

Quiet Flexion/Extension Stop For Orthopedic Brace And Orthopedic Brace Incorporating A Quiet Flexion/Extension Stop

View page
US Patent:
7544174, Jun 9, 2009
Filed:
Sep 29, 2006
Appl. No.:
11/540925
Inventors:
Jeremy Nathanson - San Clemente CA, US
Assignee:
DJO, LLC - Vista CA
International Classification:
A61F 5/00
US Classification:
602 16, 602 26, 602 27
Abstract:
The present flexion and/or extension stop includes a body portion constructed of a hard and durable material and at least one bumper portion constructed of a soft and resilient material. The stop provides quiet operation and non-jarring motion termination for the wearer. The stop also provides positive range of motion control, strength and durability. Also disclosed is an orthopedic brace incorporating the present flexion and/or extension stop.

Knee Brace Hinges With Adaptive Motion

View page
US Patent:
7615025, Nov 10, 2009
Filed:
Jan 6, 2005
Appl. No.:
11/030444
Inventors:
Jeremy J. Nathanson - San Clemente CA, US
Assignee:
DJO, LLC - Vista CA
International Classification:
A61F 5/00
US Classification:
602 16, 602 26
Abstract:
The disclosed knee brace hinges enable a knee brace including the hinges to track the natural motion of the brace wearer's knee while restraining the knee from harmful motions. In certain embodiments, in a first range of motion the hinges have only one degree of freedom, rotation about a fixed axis. In a second range of motion, the hinges have at least two degrees of freedom, rotation and translation.

Orthopedic Brace Suspension System

View page
US Patent:
7967765, Jun 28, 2011
Filed:
Nov 10, 2004
Appl. No.:
10/985366
Inventors:
Jeremy J. Nathanson - San Clemente CA, US
Assignee:
DJO, LLC - Vista CA
International Classification:
A61F 5/01
US Classification:
602 5, 602 16, 602 23
Abstract:
Provided are apparatus and methods of securing an orthopedic brace on a wearer such that the brace is unlikely to migrate. In preferred embodiments, the apparatus includes a band that extends entirely around the wearer, making contact with the entire circumference of the wearer. In certain embodiments, a strap secured to the brace threads through loops on the band, thereby operably connecting the brace and the band. In certain other embodiments, the apparatus further includes a belt that overlaps the band. Suspenders operably connect the brace to the band/belt. Because the band makes contact with the entire circumference of the wearer, the apparatus comfortably secures the brace to the wearer while effectively preventing migration of the brace and without hindering the intended function of the brace.

Hinged Ankle Brace

View page
US Patent:
8641654, Feb 4, 2014
Filed:
Oct 4, 2005
Appl. No.:
11/243754
Inventors:
Drew R. Verkade - Carlsbad CA, US
Jeremy Nathanson - San Clemente CA, US
Assignee:
DJO, LLC - Vista CA
International Classification:
A61F 5/00
A61F 13/00
US Classification:
602 65, 602 27, 602 23
Abstract:
A hinged ankle brace having a semi-rigid ankle cuff and a semi-rigid foot bed rotatably connected by a medial hinge and a lateral hinge provides enhanced stability and support to a wearer's ankle. The medial hinge of the ankle brace may be higher than the lateral hinge to accurately replicate the bending motion of an ankle. The ankle brace also includes ratchetably interconnected semi-rigid straps. These semi-rigid straps provide a semi-rigid structure encircling the ankle of a wearer for enhanced support. The ratchet mechanism may include a curved window that enables angular adjustment of the ratcheting straps. The ankle brace may also include a soft inner liner and a soft outer sleeve. The outer sleeve is configured to provide compression to the semi-rigid shell, which in turn provides additional compression to the ankle. The semi-rigid foot bed may include posterior extensions that cup and support the wearer's heel, and a posterior cut-out portion that receives the wearer's heel.

Knee Brace Hinges Having Dual Axes Of Rotation

View page
US Patent:
8043243, Oct 25, 2011
Filed:
Jan 6, 2005
Appl. No.:
11/030276
Inventors:
Jeremy J. Nathanson - San Clemente CA, US
Richard E. Gildersleeve - Carlsbad CA, US
Assignee:
DJO, LLC - Vista CA
International Classification:
A61F 5/01
US Classification:
602 23, 602 26
Abstract:
Disclosed is a knee brace that incorporates hinges that allow the brace to pivot simultaneously about a flexion-extension axis and a longitudinal rotation axis as the brace flexes and/or extends. The hinges include a medial hinge and a lateral hinge. The medial hinge defines a medial pivot axis and the lateral hinge defines a lateral pivot axis. The medial pivot axis does not coincide with the lateral pivot axis, and neither axis coincides with the flexion-extension axis. Calf portions of each hinge are pivotable with respect to their respective uprights about an axis that is substantially parallel to the longitudinal rotation axis. The pivotability of the calf portions with respect to the calf frame eliminates stresses that would otherwise develop in the hinges as the brace flexes and/or extends.
