Anastomosis Device Having Improved Tissue Presentation

View page
US Patent:
6530932, Mar 11, 2003
Filed:
Aug 30, 2000
Appl. No.:
09/650577
Inventors:
Jeffrey S. Swayze - Liberty Township OH
Douglas B. Hoffman - Harrison OH
David Stefanchik - Mason OH
Mark A. Goldin - Springboro OH
Rudolph H. Nobis - Mason OH
Assignee:
Ethicon Endo-Surgery, Inc. - Cincinnati OH
International Classification:
A61B 1704
US Classification:
606144, 606139, 606153
Abstract:
In accordance with the present invention there is provided a surgical device for presenting a first hollow organ and a second hollow organ for creation a passageway therebetween. The surgical device includes a member, an upper pin for entering a first hollow organ, and a lower pin for entering a the second hollow organ, the pins having proximal ends attached to the member, distal ends extending therefrom and longitudinal axis extending therebetween. The device further includes a first actuator assembly coupled to the member for laterally moving the distal and proximal ends of the lower pin relative to the first member, and a second actuator coupled to the member for moving the distal ends of the upper and lower pins adjacent to one another so as to move the hollow organs close together.

Surgical Stapling Instrument Incorporating A Firing Mechanism Having A Linked Rack Transmission

View page
US Patent:
6905057, Jun 14, 2005
Filed:
Sep 29, 2003
Appl. No.:
10/673930
Inventors:
Jeffrey S. Swayze - Hamilton OH, US
Assignee:
Ethicon Endo-Surgery, Inc. - Cincinnati OH
International Classification:
A61B017/088
US Classification:
2271761, 227 19, 606139
Abstract:
A surgical stapling and severing instrument particularly suited to endoscopic procedures incorporates a handle that produces separate closing and firing motions to actuate an end effector. In particular, the handle produces multiple firing strokes in order to reduce the required amount of force required to fire (i. e. , staple and sever) the end effector. A linked transmission reduces the required handle longitudinal length, yet achieves a rigid, strong configuration when straightened for firing. A traction biased firing mechanism avoids binding in driving this straightened linked rack in cooperation with an anti-backup mechanism, with a lockout mechanism that prevents releasing the closure trigger during firing. Furthermore, an external indicator gives feedback to the surgeon as to how far firing has progressed, as well as providing a manual retraction capability.

Connector Incorporating A Contact Pad Surface On A Plane Parallel To A Longitudinal Axis

View page
US Patent:
6932517, Aug 23, 2005
Filed:
Sep 28, 2001
Appl. No.:
09/967046
Inventors:
Jeffrey S. Swayze - Hamilton OH, US
Benjamin F. James - Mason OH, US
Assignee:
Ethicon Endo-Surgery, Inc. - Cincinnati OH
International Classification:
G02B006/42
US Classification:
385 88, 385 62, 385 75
Abstract:
An improved connector capable of transferring both energy and electrical signals between an energy generator and an energy transfer device is disclosed. The connector attaches the energy transfer device to the energy generator by rotation about a longitudinal axis. The connector carries at least one contact pad that has a surface on a plane parallel to the longitudinal axis. A line passing through the surface of the contact pad perpendicular to the plane is skew to the longitudinal axis, so that rotation of the connector engages the contact pad with conductive contacts associated with the energy generator in a direction substantially perpendicular to the contact pad.

US Patent:
7111769, Sep 26, 2006
Filed:
Jul 9, 2003
Appl. No.:
10/615973
Inventors:
Kenneth S. Wales - Mason OH, US
Douglas B. Hoffman - Harrison OH, US
Jeffrey S. Swayze - Hamilton OH, US
Assignee:
Ethicon Endo-Surgery, Inc. - Cincinnati OH
International Classification:
A61B 17/64
US Classification:
2271781, 2271751, 2271801
Abstract:
A surgical instrument particularly suited to endoscopic articulates an end effector by including an end effector having a geared articulation mechanism that converts rotational motion from a handle portion. A hollow articulation drive tube transfers the rotation motion in some versions to a spear gear, bevel gear or snaggle tooth gear articulation mechanism. Alternatively, one or more threaded drive rod offset from a longitudinal axis engages a worm gear or flex-neck articulation mechanism.
