A novel device, system and method for promoting the growth, development and harvest of desired plants while suppressing the growth of weeds is described. In an exemplary embodiment, the device is a tapered container with an opening at the upper, wider end of the device and an opening at the lower, narrower end of the device. The device also has one or more openings along the surface of the device between the upper end and the lower end. In an exemplary embodiment of the method, a bag of growing medium is placed over the ground and a device is inserted into the bag so that the lower end penetrates both sides of the bag and enters the ground below and the opening at the lower end communicates with the ground. The opening at the upper end of the device should be at or above the upper surface of the bag and at least one or more openings in on the surface of the device should be in communication with the growing medium contained within the bag. Thus, weed growth is suppressed and a plant grown in the device has access to nutrients contained in the bag and the ground below.

In one embodiment the instant invention generally pertains to a method for producing glucose for fermentation. The method comprises first treating a biomass with acid and heat under conditions sufficient to produce a composition mixture comprising cellulose suitable for enzymatic hydrolysis. Next, at least a portion of the cellulose of step (a) is enzymatically hydrolyzed under conditions sufficient to form a composition comprising glucose. The glucose is then fermented. Advantageously, one or more reaction conditions are more efficient because they are selected by first measuring an initial hydrolysis rate of said biomass and then selecting one or more appropriate reaction conditions based upon said initial hydrolysis rate.

The invention is based on the disclosure provided herein that secondary lymphoid organ chemokine (SLC) inhibits the growth of syngeneic tumors in vivo. Thus, the invention provides a method of treating cancer in a mammal subject by administering a therapeutically effective amount of an SLC to the mammal in combination with a checkpoint inhibitor, including monoclonal antibodies and small molecule inhibitors. Exemplary checkpoint molecules include CTLA-4, a CTLA-4 receptor, PD-1, PD1-L1, PD1-L2, 4-1BB, OX40, LAG-3, TIM-3 or a combination thereof. SLCs useful in the methods of the invention include SLC polypeptides, variants and fragments and related nucleic acids.
