Abstract:
A composite armor including a disrupting layer and a backing layer provides protection against blast and ballistic threats. The disrupting layer includes ceramic particles or tiles that disrupt the incoming projectile, while the backing layer prevents penetration past the armor by the disrupted projectile. The disrupting layer may include a layer of polygonal ceramic tiles with a deflecting front surface, encased by a retaining polymer, and may also include fire-retarding particles.

Abstract:
An exhaust manifold () is provided having a ceramic inner layer () defining an exhaust gas passageway (), and a composite insulation zone () that is highly thermally insulating. In one embodiment, the composite insulation zone () includes a plurality of metallic foils () in alternating arrangement with layers having insulating qualities. In the composite insulation zone, the layers having insulating qualities can include ceramic layers (), evacuated spaces, microsphere layers () including substantially evacuated microspheres, or a combination of these. A novel sealing arrangement also is provided for sealing the ceramic inner and metallic outer layers of a metal-encased-ceramic exhaust manifold at a location adjacent the inlet port () of a runner of the manifold. A sealing gasket () is substantially completely encased within or shielded by the metallic outer layer, so as not to contact the cylinder head () when assembled to an internal combustion engine.

Abstract:
Affixable armor that can be used to provide additional protection for a surface is described. The affixable armor includes polygonal ceramic tiles that can be attached directly to a surface, or first attached to a carrier sheet which is then attached to a surface. A visco-elastic polymer can be used to help absorb projectile impact. The ceramic tiles include a substantially conical or pyramidal deflecting front surface to provide additional protection. The ceramic tiles can be placed so that they are spaced to provide a gap with a width that is less than the diameter of an expected ballistic threat in order to provide additional projection. The affixable armor can be configured for rapid removal and replacement, or it may be permanently affixed to the surface.

Ceramic tubes are manufactured from a mixture that includes ceramic powder. The mixture is extruded through a die to form a tube. The tube is passed through an open-ended dryer, calciner, transition zone, sintering furnace, and cooler. Thereafter, the tube is cut to the desired length (which may be very long). The quality of the tube is enhanced by applying a vacuum to the mixture prior to extrusion. For tubes made of non-oxide ceramics, an inert atmosphere is maintained both inside and outside the tube in all sections of the equipment that operate above 200. degree. C. A controlled tension is applied to the tube by means of first pinch rolls disposed downstream of the dryer and second pinch rolls disposed downstream of the cooler.
