Method And Apparatus For Providing Increased Access To A Local Communication Network

View page
US Patent:
55966241, Jan 21, 1997
Filed:
Sep 26, 1994
Appl. No.:
8/312364
Inventors:
Peter J. Armbruster - Chandler AZ
James W. Bishop - Chandler AZ
Assignee:
Motorola, Inc. - Schaumburg IL
International Classification:
H04Q 738
H04Q 724
US Classification:
379 58
Abstract:
A local exchange with limited access to outside communication systems is coupled to a global satellite communication system by a mobile exchange unit. The mobile exchange unit (MXU) provides access to the local exchange by relating one channel in the global communication system to many possible destinations in the local exchange. Multiple circuits of the local exchange are associated with a single mobile number. A gateway associated with the MXU associates an available radio channel with the calling subscriber. Multi-stage dialing is eliminated and a subscriber can directly dial a number of a party in the local exchange.

Exchange Which Extends Sim Based Authentication And Method Therefor

View page
US Patent:
60029293, Dec 14, 1999
Filed:
Sep 29, 1997
Appl. No.:
8/939890
Inventors:
James William Bishop - Chandler AZ
Steve Magee - Scottsdale AZ
Nathan Miller - Santa Rosa CA
Assignee:
Mototrola, Inc. - Schaumburg IL
International Classification:
H04M 1100
H04Q 732
US Classification:
455431
Abstract:
An on-board aircraft telecommunication exchange (32) provides communication and authentication services for M subscriber identity modules (SIMs) using N transceivers (36), where M can be greater than N. Associations between SIMs (56) and transceivers (36) are established when needed. Accordingly, a pool of transceivers 36 is provided to serve the collective needs of many subscribers. A SIM-based authentication process is performed (100) using a subscriber's original SIM (56). That authentication can be extended to a temporary SIM (106) that is substituted for the original SIM throughout the remainder of a flight. Alternatively, the original SIMs (56) may be locked in place and relinquished when a subscriber provides an appropriate PIN.

Method And Apparatus For Conveying Audio Signals Using Digital Packets

View page
US Patent:
57373310, Apr 7, 1998
Filed:
Sep 18, 1995
Appl. No.:
8/529812
Inventors:
Thomas Jake Hoppal - Gilbert AZ
Peter Joseph Armbruster - Tempe AZ
James William Bishop - Chandler AZ
Johanna Wild - Scottsdale AZ
Assignee:
Motorola, Inc. - Schaumburg IL
International Classification:
H04J 312
H04M 342
US Classification:
370349
Abstract:
A digital telecommunication network (10) provides an audio processor (56) for each call in each external node (14). The audio processor (56) includes a vocoder and additional functions. At a source external node (14), the audio processor (56) detects DTMF events and encodes the events in a call-related signalling packet (26) which conveys a history of all DTMF activity at the source node over the past several seconds. In addition, the source node detects silence and configures a call-related signalling packet (26) to instruct a destination node (14) how to synthesize comfort noise. Speech is encoded as vocoded voice packets rather than call-related signalling packets. At a destination external node, the node's audio processor (56) distinguishes call-related signalling from vocoded voice. The audio processor (56) synthesizes voice, comfort noise, DTMF signals, and other signals in response to the call-related signalling packets and vocoded voice packets.

Radio Telecommunication Network With Selectable Ring Signal Coverage

View page
US Patent:
58093966, Sep 15, 1998
Filed:
Mar 29, 1996
Appl. No.:
8/624232
Inventors:
Peter J. Armbruster - Tempe AZ
Dean Paul Vanden Heuvel - Chandler AZ
James W. Bishop - Chandler AZ
Assignee:
Motorola, Inc. - Schaumburg IL
International Classification:
H04Q 720
H04B 7185
US Classification:
455 121
Abstract:
A radio telecommunication network (10) includes satellites (12) which project cells (30) on the surface of the earth. Mobile units (16) are alerted to incoming calls when they receive ring signals. Ring signal coverage parameter values are selected in response to differentiating data (46) which cause different ring signals to be activated for mobile units (16) which appear to be proximately located. An illumination area ring signal coverage parameter may have a value selected in response to differentiating data (46) so that larger illumination areas are used for higher speed mobile units (16"). A transmission power ring signal coverage parameter may have a value selected in response to differentiating data (46) so that higher power ring signals are used in specific situations identified by the differentiating data (46).

Communication Network With Dynamic Intraswitching

View page
US Patent:
55239978, Jun 4, 1996
Filed:
Jun 13, 1994
Appl. No.:
8/259099
Inventors:
James W. Bishop - Chandler AZ
Assignee:
Motorola, Inc. - Schaumburg IL
International Classification:
H04B 7185
US Classification:
370 54
Abstract:
A communication network (10) includes a constellation of satellites (12) in orbit around the earth. Gateways (14) communicate with the satellites (12), reside on the surface of the earth, and interface the network (10) to the local PSTN (18). User units (16) communicate with satellites (12) and provide communication services to users. A gateway (14) includes a mobile switching center (22), which connects half-calls, and an earth terminal controller (20), which occasionally overrides connections defined in the mobile switching center (22). When possible, communication paths connected at the mobile switching center (22) are intraswitched at a satellite (12) rather than being routed through the mobile switching center. However, when supplementary services are requested, the communication path is reconfigured back to the mobile switching center (22) so that additional signals may be inserted into the communication path.

Method And Apparatus For Registering Mobile User Groups With A Radio Telecommunication System

View page
US Patent:
59566396, Sep 21, 1999
Filed:
Feb 26, 1996
Appl. No.:
8/606952
Inventors:
Peter Joseph Armbruster - Tempe AZ
Kenneth Lee Sowles - Chandler AZ
James William Bishop - Chandler AZ
Assignee:
Motorola, Inc. - Schaumburg IL
International Classification:
H04B 7185
US Classification:
455431
Abstract:
A method and apparatus for a communication system (100) to register groups of co-located users in a mobile vehicle (110) involves collecting (200) registration information for multiple users by a Vehicle Communications Control Unit (500) (VCCU) on board the mobile vehicle (110), creating (202) at least one group registration request message by the VCCU (500), and sending the at least one group registration request message to an Earth Terminal (102) (ET) of the communication system (100). After the communication system (100) registers each user whose registration information is contained within the at least one group registration request message, the ET (102) sends (312) at least one group registration response message to the VCCU (500), where the message includes information describing whether each registration attempt was successful. The VCCU (500) can then inform (210) each user as to the status of the registration attempt.
