Process For Making Quinacridone And Its Derivatives

View page
US Patent:
40641295, Dec 20, 1977
Filed:
Sep 17, 1976
Appl. No.:
5/724150
Inventors:
Herman Gerson - New York NY
John Francis Santimauro - Wyckoff NJ
Lawrence Robert Lerner - Livingston NJ
Assignee:
Harmon Colors Corporation - Haledon NJ
International Classification:
C09B 4800
US Classification:
260279QA
Abstract:
A process is described for making quinarcridone and its derivatives, useful as organic pigments, wherein a 2,5-diarylaminoterephthalic acid and an acid catalyst are heated in a two phase liquid system, comprising ethylene glycol and an organic liquid which is immiscible with water and ethylene glycol, wherein the ethylene glycol is present in an amount of about 0. 25 to 4 parts by weight per part of 2,5-diarylaminoterephthalic acid and the organic liquid is present in an amount of at least about 2 parts by weight per part of ethylene glycol, at a temperature sufficient to remove by-product water from the liquid system by vaporization.

Process For Alpha-Phase Metal Phthalocyanine Pigments

View page
US Patent:
55340555, Jul 9, 1996
Filed:
Aug 24, 1994
Appl. No.:
8/295342
Inventors:
Herman Gerson - New York NY
Abdul Sattar - Mt. Pleasant SC
Assignee:
Bayer Corporation - Pittsburgh PA
International Classification:
C09B 6750
US Classification:
106413
Abstract:
This invention relates to a process for preparing alpha-phase metal phthalocyanine pigments from crude metal phthalocyanine pigments comprising (a) acid pasting or acid swelling a crude metal phthalocyanine pigment; (b) dry milling the acid-pasted or acid-swelled metal phthalocyanine pigment in the presence of 5 to 50 parts by weight of a stabilizer per 100 parts by weight of the crude metal phthalocyanine pigment until the average particle size is reduced to less than about 0. 5. mu. m; (c) finishing the milled metal phthalocyanine pigment by thoroughly mixing said milled metal phthalocyanine pigment with a finishing solvent mixture comprising 3 to 6 parts by weight, relative to the crude metal phthalocyanine pigment, of water and 0. 4 to 1. 0 parts by weight, relative to the crude metal phthalocyanine pigment, of an organic solvent, optionally in the presence of 0 to 45 parts by weight of a stabilizer per 100 parts by weight of the crude metal phthalocyanine pigment, with the proviso that the total amount of stabilizer used in steps (b) and (c) ranges from 5 to 50 parts by weight per 100 parts by weight of the crude metal phthalocyanine pigment; and (d) isolating the alpha-phase metal phthalocyanine pigment.

US Patent:
53933397, Feb 28, 1995
Filed:
May 11, 1994
Appl. No.:
8/241090
Inventors:
Herman Gerson - New York NY
Abdul Sattar - Mt. Pleasant SC
Assignee:
Miles Inc. - Pittsburgh PA
International Classification:
C09B 6750
US Classification:
106410
Abstract:
This invention relates to an improved process for preparing metal phthalocyanine pigments comprising (a) heating at a temperature of about 150. degree. C. to about 200. degree. C. a mixture comprising (i) a phthalocyanine-forming material based on phthalic acid, (ii) at least about 25 mole percent, relative to the phthalocyanine-forming material (i), of a metal donor, (iii) at least about 100 mole percent, relative to the phthalocyanine-forming material (i), of a nitrogen donor, (iv) 1 to about 20 percent by weight, relative to the phthalocyanine-forming material (i), of a catalyst, and (v) about 250 to about 400 percent by weight, relative to the phthalocyanine-forming material (i), of a di(C. sub. 1 -C. sub. 3 alkyl) phthalate solvent; and (b) isolating the metal phthalocyanine pigment.
