Jan 7, 1982
Appl. No.:
6/337900
Inventors:
Herbert K. Reimschuessel - Morristown NJ
Bruce T. DeBona - Madison NJ
Assignee:
Allied Corporation - Morris Township, Morris County NJ
International Classification:
C07C 6500
US Classification:
562473
Abstract:
The subject polymers are novel homopolymers and copolymers. The homopolymers are characterized by relatively high T. sub. g of about 120. degree. C. relative to their T. sub. m of about 250. degree. C. , whereby they can readily be fabricated into fibers, films and like structures from the melt, and retain strength above 100. degree. C. The copolymers have T. sub. g 's intermediate between those of the homopolymers of the constituent monomers, and can be fabricated as for the subject homopolymers. Novel processes of obtaining the monomer, p-(1,1-dimethyl-2-hydroxyethyl)benzoic acid, are disclosed.

Novel Cationic Acrylamide Polymers And Processes For Their Preparation

View page
US Patent:
48883964, Dec 19, 1989
Filed:
Jun 8, 1988
Appl. No.:
7/203835
Inventors:
Herbert K. Reimschuessel - Morristown NJ
William G. Chiang - Fayetteville NY
George J. W. Tichenor - Fayetteville NY
Assignee:
Polypure, Inc. - Solvay NY
International Classification:
C08F 830
US Classification:
525379
Abstract:
Novel cationic polymers are provided by reaction of high molecular weight polymers and copolymers of acrylamide with an alkyl epoxide compound such as glycidyldialkylamine or glycidyltrialkylammonium salt to form polymer chain units containing e. g. pendant (N-2-hydroxypropyl) dialkylamine groups of their trialkylammonium salts. Processes for making the graft copolymers are provided in which the reaction is carried out while maintaining the reaction mixture in gel form by swelling the starting solid polymer with a solvent mixture. The reaction may be carried out in a homogeneous reaction environment or in a heterogeneous reaction environment by dispersing the starting solid polymer in an inert liquid that is a non-solvent for both the polymer and the salt. The polymeric products of the reaction may be hardened with a suitable liquid, such as isopropanol, to a solid particulate material.

Process For The Preparation Of Anhydrous N-(3-Chloro-2-Hydroxypropyl) Trialkylammonium Salts

View page
US Patent:
45944520, Jun 10, 1986
Filed:
Jun 24, 1985
Appl. No.:
6/748083
Inventors:
Herbert K. Reimschuessel - Morristown NJ
Michael A. Kocur - Union NJ
Assignee:
Allied Corporation - Morris Township NJ
International Classification:
C07C 9126
US Classification:
564292
Abstract:
The preparation of anhydrous, pure, crystalline N-(3-chloro-2-hydroxypropyl) trialkylammonium salts is disclosed by a process entailing reaction of epichlorohydrin with a trimethylammonium salt in an organic solvent which is a solvent for the two reactants and a non-solvent for the reaction product. A fine crystalline, chemically pure, anhydrous N-(3-chloro-2-hydroxypropyl) trimethylamine hydrochloride is produced by a process that does not entail an aqueous medium or the use of gaseous trimethylamine. The process comprises reacting trimethylammonium chloride with epichlorohydrin in an organic solvent which is a solvent for either of the two reactants and a non-solvent for the reaction product. Though a number of organic solvents may be used, it was found that chloroform was particularly suited. The reaction proceeds readily at temperatures within the range of 0. degree. to 50. degree. C.

Quaternary Polyalkylene Imine Containing 2-Hydroxypropyltrimethyl Ammonium Salt Pendent Side Chain Groups

View page
US Patent:
46057072, Aug 12, 1986
Filed:
Feb 25, 1985
Appl. No.:
6/704849
Inventors:
Herbert K. Reimschuessel - Morristown NJ
Harry E. Ulmer - Morristown NJ
Assignee:
Allied Corporation - Morris Township, Morris County NJ
International Classification:
C08G 7300
C08F 812
US Classification:
525410
Abstract:
Polyalkylene imines containing 2-hydroxypropyltrimethylammonium salt side chains are obtained by reaction between alkylene imine polymers and copolymers and a glycidyltrimethylammonium salt. These polymers are very effective flocculants, particularly in the area of water clarification. They are obtained from a variety of sources, e. g. by modification of either commercial polyethylene imines or polymers derived from oxazolines, and oxazinolines, from the polymerization of aziridine monomers or from the condensation of a low molecular weight polyamine and a dihaloalkane.
