G01S 1393
US Classification:
342 70, 342 27, 342 28, 342 71, 342 72, 342195, 34235706, 34235708, 701300, 701301
Abstract:
A method for a subject vehicle to avoid collisions is provided. At least one lane feeding into an intersection is scanned. The presence of a threat vehicle in the at least one lane is detected. Whether the subject vehicle and the threat vehicle will occupy the intersection at the same time is predicted. A warning is issued in response to the predicting.

US Patent:
6516273, Feb 4, 2003
Filed:
Nov 4, 1999
Appl. No.:
09/433717
Inventors:
John A. Pierowicz - Lancaster NY
Herbert A. Pirson - Amherst NY
David Yuhnke - Wlliamsville NY
Assignee:
Veridian Engineering, Inc. - Arlington VA
International Classification:
G06G 770
US Classification:
701301, 701117, 340903, 340929
Abstract:
The present invention relates to a system installed in a vehicle to: determine the location of the vehicle; identify each intersection as the vehicle approaches the intersection; determine the presence and type of traffic control device at that intersection; determine whether the traffic control device associated with the intersection, in the direction of travel of the vehicle, requires the vehicle to come to a complete stop; determine the acceleration required to stop the vehicle prior to its entry into the intersection; and, if the required acceleration exceeds a predetermined threshold level, alert the driver, by means of an aural, visual and/or haptic indication, to brake the vehicle prior to its entry into the intersection. The system may also preempt driver control of the braking system and begin braking the vehicle automatically prior to its entry into the intersection. In another embodiment of the invention, the system may determine the phase of the traffic light via a communications channel between the vehicle and the traffic light; repetitively check to see if the vehicle is entering the intersection in contravention of the traffic lights indication and, if the vehicle does so begin to enter the intersection, then alert the driver, by means of an alarm or indication, to brake the vehicle prior to its entry into the intersection.
