Cooling System For Downhole Tools

View page
US Patent:
6336408, Jan 8, 2002
Filed:
Jan 29, 1999
Appl. No.:
09/240955
Inventors:
Robert A. Parrott - Houston TX, 77035
Haoshi Song - Sugar Land TX, 77479
Kuo-Chiang Chen - Sugar Land TX, 77478
International Classification:
F42B 300
US Classification:
102312, 102313, 102704, 102705, 166 57, 175 17
Abstract:
Apparatus and method for cooling a component inside a tool includes a container and a plurality of heat sinks positioned in the container. The components are positioned in the container with the heat sinks for maintaining a reduced temperature inside the container. Further, an insulating layer and a reflective layer surround the heat sinks and components to reduce heat transfer. Alternatively, the container can have a hollow wall that encloses the space in which a heat sink material (such as an eutectic material) is disposed. The components to be protected are located in the container. The eutectic material includes a composition having tin and zinc. The insulating layer includes a container that stores a vacuum layer, such as a dewar flask.

Tubing Elongation Correction System Methods

View page
US Patent:
6450259, Sep 17, 2002
Filed:
Feb 8, 2002
Appl. No.:
10/071279
Inventors:
Haoshi Song - Sugar Land TX
David E. Rios-Aleman - Houston TX
Assignee:
Halliburton Energy Services, Inc. - Houston TX
International Classification:
E21B 4709
US Classification:
1662551
Abstract:
A surface processor uses an environmental profile to determine the sub-surface length of tubing disposed in a well bore. Information relating to tubing properties is stored in a memory module of the surface processor. The environmental profile includes data relating to well bore ambient conditions and the operating parameters of well equipment. Surface processor calculates the tubing elongation or length reduction corresponding to the environmental profile. Surface processor may repeat this process to develop a measured depth chart for a well. Logging operations performed in conjunction with the sub-surface length calculations allows formation data to be associated with the measured depth chart.

Coiled Tubing Connector

US Patent:
6761574, Jul 13, 2004
Filed:
Mar 24, 2000
Appl. No.:
09/534685
Inventors:
Haoshi Song - Sugar Land TX
James W. Estep - Houston TX
James B. Terry - Houston TX
Thomas Platt Wilson - Lafayette LA
Assignee:
Halliburton Energy Services, Inc. - Houston TX
International Classification:
H01R 1362
US Classification:
439320, 285 39
Abstract:
A coiled tubing connector includes a male and female housing. A rotating ring having threads is disposed on the male housing. When the male housing is joined to the female housing, the threads of the rotating ring threadingly engage threads disposed on the internal circumference of the female housing. The male housing also includes splines which align with grooves on the female housing. Situated on both the male and female housing are electrical contacts which themselves engage when the housings are joined. The electrical contacts are connected to wires embedded in the composite tubing so that electrical power or data signals from one length of composite tubing can pass through the connector to another length of coiled tubing. The ends of the composite tubing are affixed to both the male and female housings through a compression fitting.

Abstract:
The drilling system includes a work string supporting a bottom hole assembly. The work string including lengths of pipe having a non-metallic portion. The work string preferably includes a composite coiled tubing having a fluid impermeable liner, multiple load carrying layers, and a wear layer. Multiple electrical conductors and data transmission conductors may be embedded in the load carrying layers for carrying current or transmitting data between the bottom hole assembly and the surface. The bottom hole assembly includes a bit, a gamma ray and inclinometer instrument package, a steerable assembly, an electronics section, a transmission, and a power section for rotating the bit. It may or may not include a propulsion system. The drilling system may be a gravity based drilling system that does include a propulsion system. Various motive means may be provided such as gravity, to apply weight on the bit.

Spoolable Composite Coiled Tubing Connector

US Patent:
7059881, Jun 13, 2006
Filed:
Apr 7, 2003
Appl. No.:
10/408586
Inventors:
Haoshi Song - Sugar Land TX, US
James W. Estep - Houston TX, US
Assignee:
Halliburton Energy Services, Inc. - Houston TX
International Classification:
H01R 4/60
US Classification:
439191, 439320
Abstract:
A connector providing methods and apparatus for connecting two lengths of composite coiled tubing whereby the connector can be spooled with the tubing onto a reel. Embodiments of the connector include female and male housings which join together to create the coiled tubing connection providing mechanical and electrical or fiber optic connectivity between the two lengths of tubing. A connecting member on the male housing connectably engages the female housing. Splines on the male housing also align with corresponding flutes on the female housing. The female and male housings each attach to end portions of coiled tubing through a clamped connection and with the housings and connecting member being substantially flush with the outside diameter of the coiled tubing.
