Abstract:
Surface and thereafter applying a priming coating comprising a polytetrafluoroethylene solution containing a dispersed ceramic filler, wherein the priming coating is dried in two steps by first air-drying the coating, followed by force drying at elevated temperatures, wherein a second polytetrafluoroethylene coating is applied on the dried primer coating, and a third polytetrafluoroethylene coating is applied on the second coating while the second coating has not dried. The coated bond tool is baked to cure the second and third coatings. Prior to application of the priming coating, the metallic tool can be subjected to pretreatment such as pre-baking and grit blasting.

Method For Fabricating An Advanced Composite Aerostructure Article Having An Integral Co-Cured Fly Away Hollow Mandrel

View page
US Patent:
6458309, Oct 1, 2002
Filed:
May 10, 1999
Appl. No.:
09/309390
Inventors:
Gregory A. Allen - Highland CA
Jesse C. Dinkel - Corona CA
John S. Sentz - Riverside CA
Assignee:
Rohr, Inc. - Chula Vista CA
International Classification:
B28B 300
US Classification:

Abstract:
An article is made by co-curing a lay up on a composite bond jig of fiber-reinforced composite materials having a lower layer, at least one elongated hollow mandrel of a stiffened graphite fabric having its lower surface adhered to the upper surface of the lower layer, and an upper layer adhered to the top and side surfaces of the hollow mandrel and at least portions of the upper surface of the bottom layer.

Method For Fabricating An Advanced Composite Aerostructure Article Having An Integral Co-Cured Fly Away Hollow Mandrel

View page
US Patent:
6632502, Oct 14, 2003
Filed:
May 9, 2002
Appl. No.:
10/142490
Inventors:
Gregory A. Allen - Highland CA
Jesse C. Dinkel - Corona CA
John S. Sentz - Riverside CA
Assignee:
Rohr, Inc. - Chula Vista CA
International Classification:
B32B 700
US Classification:
428119
Abstract:
A novel method is disclosed for fabricating a co-cured advanced composite integral one piece aerostructure article. The method comprises assembling on a composite bond jig a first uncured composite layer in the shape of at least one surface of a composite aerostructure article, the first composite layer having at least one uncured resin-impregnated laminate layer. At least one longitudinally extending hollow mandrel is secured on the upper surface of the first composite layer. A second uncured composite layer is assembled on the bond jig over the upper outer surface of the hollow mandrel and at least a portion of the first uncured composite layer, the second uncured composite layer having at least one uncured resin-impregnated layer. The lay up assembled on the composite bond jig is subjected to a cycle of predetermined pressure and temperature to cure such resin impregnated layers to form a unitary co-cured one-piece aerostructure article.

Co-Cured Composite Structures And Method Of Making Them

View page
US Patent:
6743504, Jun 1, 2004
Filed:
Mar 1, 2001
Appl. No.:
09/797286
Inventors:
Gregory A. Allen - Highland CA
David J. Belisario - Riverside CA
Assignee:
Rohr, Inc. - Chula Vista CA
International Classification:
B32B 108
US Classification:
428362, 428 357, 428 361, 428 369, 428188, 527931
Abstract:
A composite structure has composite skin layers and at least two elongated stiffener/spacer composite members interposed between the skin layers. The stiffener/spacer composite members are arranged generally longitudinally of the skin layers in spaced-apart relation laterally. Each of the skin layers is formed by assembling a layer of an uncured resin-impregnated fiber material on a forming surface of a jig. Each stiffener/spacer composite member is formed of an uncured resin-impregnated fiber material that is laid up over an elongated hollow mandrel of a stiffened fabric and is assembled to one of the uncured skin layers. The jigs are juxtaposed to form a sandwich with the assembled uncured composite layers, which are then vacuum-bagged and co-cured under a predetermined pressure and a predetermined temperature to render the structure unitary.
