Display Apparatus With Light Guide Based Solar Concentrator

View page
US Patent:
20130215122, Aug 22, 2013
Filed:
Feb 14, 2013
Appl. No.:
13/766947
Inventors:
Gregg M. Podojil - Brecksville OH, US
Ian Hardcastle - Santa Cruz CA, US
Jeffery R. Parker - Richfield OH, US
Matthew R. Wancata - Strongsville OH, US
Fumitomo Hide - San Jose CA, US
Assignee:
RAMBUS INC. - Sunnyvale CA
International Classification:
F21V 8/00
G09G 3/00
US Classification:
345501, 362607, 349 62
Abstract:
A display apparatus includes a display, a primary light concentrator, a concentrator light guide, and a solar cell. The primary light concentrator is arranged in tandem with the display, and the primary light concentrator is configured to concentrate incident light into an array of output regions. The concentrator light guide receives light from the primary light concentrator. The concentrator light guide includes light redirecting elements aligned with the output regions of the primary light concentrator to redirect light from the primary light concentrator along the concentrator light guide toward an edge thereof. The solar cell is located adjacent the edge of the concentrator light guide.

Light Bulb With Planar Light Guides

View page
US Patent:
20130322076, Dec 5, 2013
Filed:
May 30, 2013
Appl. No.:
13/905449
Inventors:
Timothy A. McCollum - Avon Lake OH, US
Fumitomo Hide - San Jose CA, US
Gregg M. Podojil - Brecksville OH, US
Ian Hardcastle - Santa Cruz CA, US
International Classification:
F21V 8/00
US Classification:
362240
Abstract:
A light bulb includes light guides extending in a direction having a radial component with respect to a longitudinal axis, each light guide including a light input edge, opposed major surfaces, and light extracting elements at least one of the opposed major surfaces. In one embodiment, the light guides are disposed about an axial heat sink, and for each light guide, a respective light source is mounted to the axial heat sink to edge light the light guide such that light from the light source propagates in the light guide by total internal reflection. In another embodiment, a housing is at an end of the light guides, and for each light guide, a respective light source is mounted to the housing to edge light the light guide such that light from the light source propagates in the light guide by total internal reflection.

Lighting Assembly With Cornuate Light Guide

View page
US Patent:
20130194809, Aug 1, 2013
Filed:
Oct 21, 2011
Appl. No.:
13/878485
Inventors:
Brian E. Richardson - Los Gatos CA, US
Timothy A. McCollum - Avon Lake OH, US
Fumitomo Hide - San Jose CA, US
Gregg M. Podojil - Brecksville OH, US
Assignee:
RAMBUS DELAWARE LLC - Brecksville OH
International Classification:
F21V 7/00
US Classification:
362298
Abstract:
A lighting assembly that includes a cornuate light guide and an annular light extracting and redirecting member. The light guide has a radial light input surface, an axial light input region, radial light output region and a flared region between input region and output region. Light input at the light input surface propagates to and within the light output region by total internal reflection at major surfaces of the light guide. The light extracting and redirecting member has a light extracting element in optical contact with an annular region of one of the major surfaces of the light output region, and a reflective light redirecting element to axially redirect the extracted light with a defined light ray angle distribution.

Modular Light-Emitting Panel Assembly

View page
US Patent:
20180074257, Mar 15, 2018
Filed:
Aug 23, 2017
Appl. No.:
15/683861
Inventors:
- Sunnyvale CA, US
Jeffery R. Parker - Pleasanton CA, US
Gregg M. Podojil - Cleveland OH, US
International Classification:
F21V 8/00
F21V 13/00
Abstract:
A modular light-emitting panel assembly has first and second light guides edge lit by respective light sources. Each light guide has a light input edge, opposed side edges, opposed major surfaces and a pattern of light extracting elements at at least one of the major surfaces. The light guides are juxtaposed with a side edge of the first light guide abutting a side edge of the second light guide at a seam and with the major surfaces nominally coplanar. Various embodiments of the panel assembly additionally include respective structures that reduce visibility of the seam when the light sources illuminate the panel assembly.
