System And Apparatus For Generating A Unique Identity For A Computer-Based Product

View page
US Patent:
6561425, May 13, 2003
Filed:
Dec 28, 2001
Appl. No.:
09/683436
Inventors:
Roman Kresina - Oxford CT
George Brookner - Norwalk CT
Assignee:
Ascom Hasler Mailing Systems Inc. - Shelton CT
International Classification:
G06K 710
US Classification:
23546201, 235101, 364466, 364900, 380 21, 380 25, 380 30, 380 51, 380 55
Abstract:
Computer-based products such as postal security devices are manufactured as generic, nondescript units. Each has a unique identifier or embedded hardware serial number readable by data communications such as serial electrical communications. At customization time, a human-readable marking is placed on the device, along with a bar code indicative of the human-readable marking. A bar-code reader reads the bar code. The embedded hardware serial number is read. A record is made in a database indicative of the embedded hardware serial number and the bar code information. Software may then be selected based on the bar code information, and loaded into the device, typically within a cryptographically secure area within the device. At a later time the device may be retired from service and reprogrammed, in which case a new human-readable marking and bar code are affixed to the device. The embedded hardware serial number and new bar code information are read and appropriate new data records are created.

System For Providing Early Warning Preemptive Postal Equipment Replacement

View page
US Patent:
6842742, Jan 11, 2005
Filed:
Jul 31, 2000
Appl. No.:
09/628763
Inventors:
George Brookner - Norwalk CT, US
Assignee:
Ascom Hasler Mailing Systems, Inc. - Shelton CT
International Classification:
G06F 1760
US Classification:
705 60, 70401, 70409, 70410, 380 51, 377 16, 700108
Abstract:
An improved system for providing early warning preemptive postal equipment replacement. Selected performance parameters the postal equipment are monitored and compared against predetermined operational boundaries. The system is capable of providing for variability in the performance parameters, wherein these parameters may be permitted to vary over time and usage of the equipment. The monitoring gives an indication of the overall system performance. If the system performance goes outside of operational boundaries, or changes significantly over time, replacement of the equipment can then be scheduled with minimal inconvenience to the customer.

System And Method For Management Of Correspondence

International Classification:
G06K015/00
H04N001/32
US Classification:
358 115, 358468, 37910001
Abstract:
In the system of the invention, a user provides inputs at a user interface (). The user's inputs relate to the expected type of delivery (). Alternatively, the system may already have information stored as to the type of delivery () to be used with particular correspondents. Based on the type of delivery (), the system () determines for each item of correspondence, whether the delivery will be by physical delivery of a printed document (), by fax () or by e-mail (). The system () further determines for each item of correspondence, which is to be delivered by physical delivery a printed document (), whether an envelope () is required and if the address information is to be printed on the envelope or on a label () that is to be applied to the envelope. Further in the case of an item of correspondence, which is to be delivered by physical delivery a postage indicia is printed on the envelope or on a label () that is to be applied to the envelope. If the system () determines for an item of correspondence that the delivery will be by fax (), then the correspondence is sent using fax ().

Secure Remote Access To Metering Product Enclosure

View page
US Patent:
6942144, Sep 13, 2005
Filed:
Jan 31, 2003
Appl. No.:
10/355907
Inventors:
George Brookner - Norwalk CT, US

International Classification:
G06K005/00
US Classification:
235382, 902 31, 340 52, 340 56, 705410
Abstract:
A system for providing remote control access to internal components of a device. The system comprises a housing comprising a cover and a base, at least one device being located within the housing and at least one latching mechanism internal to the housing adapted to secure the cover to the base. A control sender is adapted to communicate with the device and the at least one latching mechanism to command the latching mechanism to unsecure the housing in order to allow access to the internal components of the device when a users identity is verified.

System For Protecting Cryptographic Processing And Memory Resources For Postal Franking Machines

View page
US Patent:
6986053, Jan 10, 2006
Filed:
Nov 7, 1997
Appl. No.:
09/297784
Inventors:
Robert Schwartz - Branford CT, US
George Brookner - Norwalk CT, US
Edward J. Naclerio - Madison CT, US
Assignee:
Ascom Hasler Mailing Systems, Inc. - Shelton CT
International Classification:
H04L 9/32
US Classification:
713193, 713194, 380 55
Abstract:
An improved system for protecting cryptographic processing and memory for postal franking machines. Appropriate cryptographic processing and memory resources are contained in a Postal Security Device (PSD), which defines a cryptographic and physical boundary. Cryptographic processing occurs in the PSD, which provides security to these resources, thereby minimizing a successful fraudulent attack on the system. Speed of the cryptographic processing is also increased. The PSD may be in the form of an Applications Specific Integrated Circuit (ASIC) or Personal Computer Memory Card International Association (PCMCIA) Card.
