Surgical Instrument With Bending Articulation Controlled Articulation Pivot Joint

View page
US Patent:
7481824, Jan 27, 2009
Filed:
Dec 30, 2005
Appl. No.:
11/323536
Inventors:
Chad P. Boudreaux - Cincinnati OH, US
Douglas J. Siebenaler - Maineville OH, US
Geoffrey C. Hueil - Mason OH, US
Kenneth E. Hogue - Mason OH, US
Christoph L. Gillum - Middletown OH, US
Assignee:
Ethicon Endo-Surgery, Inc. - Cincinnati OH
International Classification:
A61B 17/00
A61B 1/00
A61M 39/10
B25J 17/02
US Classification:
606205, 600146, 604533, 7449006, 901 29
Abstract:
A surgical instrument particularly suited to endoscopic and laparoscopic insertion through a cannula of a trocar into an insufflated body cavity or lumen includes a bending member in an elongate shaft that acts to rotate an end effector about an articulation pivot joint. A proximally directed camming surface (e. g. , gear segment, cam recess) aft of a pivotal attachment of the end effector to a proximal frame ground of the elongate shaft interacts with a bending member whose proximal end is ground to the proximal frame ground. Differential fluidic actuators or mechanical cam bars deflect a distal end (e. g. , rack, cam point) of the bending member to effect articulation. Thereby, the end effector may act upon tissue that would otherwise be obscured, such as behind an organ. The articulated end effector also advantageously allows an endoscope to be positioned behind the end effector without being blocked by the instrument shaft.

Instrument Lock Assembly For Trocar

View page
US Patent:
7597701, Oct 6, 2009
Filed:
Sep 17, 2004
Appl. No.:
10/943213
Inventors:
Geoffrey C. Hueil - Mason OH, US
Thomas A. Gilker - Cincinnati OH, US
Assignee:
Ethican Endo-Surgery, Inc. - Cincinnati OH
International Classification:
A61B 17/34
A61M 5/178
US Classification:
606185, 60416701
Abstract:
A lock assembly for use in conjunction with a trocar sleeve includes a lock assembly housing having an aperture extending therethrough. The lock assembly also includes a cam lever and an elastomeric block positioned within the lock assembly housing. The cam lever includes a first end pivotally secured to the lock assembly housing and a free second end that is adapted for user actuation, wherein rotation of the cam lever brings the elastomeric block into engagement with an instrument passing through the lock assembly housing for locking an instrument relative thereto.

Surgical Instrument Having An Articulating End Effector

View page
US Patent:
7670334, Mar 2, 2010
Filed:
Jan 10, 2006
Appl. No.:
11/329020
Inventors:
Geoffrey C. Hueil - Mason OH, US
Joseph Charles Hueil - Loveland OH, US
Kenneth Edward Hogue - Mason OH, US
Douglas Jon Siebenaler - Maineville OH, US
Assignee:
Ethicon Endo-Surgery, Inc. - Cincinnati OH
International Classification:
A61B 17/00
US Classification:
606 1, 2271751, 606139, 606205
Abstract:
An articulating surgical instrument is shown, which comprises a shaft and an end effector. The shaft has a longitudinal axis, and the end effector is operationally coupled, preferably mechanically coupled, to the shaft at an articulation pivot. The instrument also comprises a first band, and in some embodiments, a second band, each operationally connected to the end effector and extending through at least a portion of the shaft. An articulation control applies a force in a direction substantially transverse to the longitudinal axis, wherein the force, when applied in one direction, is translated through the first band to the end effector to effect rotation of the end effector relative to the shaft about the articulation pivot in a first rotational direction, and when the force is applied in the opposite direction, is translated through the second band to the end effector to effect rotation of the end effector relative to the shaft about the articulation pivot in a second rotational direction.
