View page
US Patent:
5793458, Aug 11, 1998
Filed:
Dec 18, 1996
Appl. No.:
8/768502
Inventors:
John A. VanderPloeg - Highland MI
Gang Xu - Northville MI
Adiel Abileah - Farmington Hill MI
Assignee:
OIS Optical Imaging Systems, Inc. - Northville MI
International Classification:
G02F 11335
US Classification:
349118
Abstract:
A normally white twisted nematic liquid crystal display is provided for outputting improved viewing characteristics which are defined by high contrast ratios and reduced inversion. The display includes both positive and negative retardation films, the negative films being biaxial and defined by n. sub. x >n. sub. y >n. sub. z in certain embodiments where the "z" direction is substantially perpendicular to the film plane and the "x" and "y" directions are substantially parallel to the film plane. By providing the positive and biaxial negative retarders with specific retardation values and/or ratios, improved viewing characteristics are provided. According to other embodiments, a positive and a negative (uniaxial or biaxial) retarder may be provided on only one side of the liquid crystal layer.

Nw Twisted Nematic Lcd With Negative And Tilted Retarders On Each Side Of Liquid Crystal Cell To Improve Vertical Contrast Ratios

View page
US Patent:
6567143, May 20, 2003
Filed:
Apr 28, 1998
Appl. No.:
09/066827
Inventors:
John A. VanderPloeg - Highland MI
Gang Xu - Cupertino CA
Assignee:
Guardian Industries Corp. - Auburn Hills MI
International Classification:
G02F 11335
US Classification:
349120, 349118
Abstract:
A normally white twisted nematic (TN) liquid crystal display (LCD) outputs improved viewing characteristics which are defined by high contrast ratios and/or reduced inversion. The display includes a pair of negative tilted retarders located on opposite sides of the liquid crystal layer, each of the tilted retarders including a tilt or incline angle which varies throughout the thickness of the layer. Additionally, one or two negative uniaxial or biaxial retarders are provided. As a result of the particular orientations, alignments, and retardation values described in the different embodiments herein, the display exhibits improved contrast and reduced inversion, often in the same viewing areas. Contrast ratio in the positive vertical viewing zone is especially improved.

Actuator Assembly For Electrohydraulic Operation Of Cylinder Valves

View page
US Patent:
6578536, Jun 17, 2003

Dec 18, 2001
Appl. No.:
10/025579
Inventors:
William Peter Donohue - Milford MI
Alfred Edmund Lynn - Troy MI
Gang Xu - Westlake OH
Vijay Garg - Canton MI
Assignee:
Visteon Global Technologies, Inc. - Dearborn MI
International Classification:
F01L 134
US Classification:
123 9018, 123 9015, 123 9011, 123 9012, 25112901, 25112916
Abstract:
The present invention provides an actuator assembly for operating a cylinder valve of an internal combustion engine. The actuator assembly achieves fast response times by utilizing a solenoid actuator that contains an armature element formed of a powder metal. A valve system that utilizes two of the actuator assemblies in conjunction with a cylinder valve is also provided.

Method And Apparatus For Calibrating A Variable Force Solenoid

View page
US Patent:
6631633, Oct 14, 2003
Filed:
Nov 2, 2000
Appl. No.:
09/704885
Inventors:
Vijay K. Garg - Canton MI
Zheng Lou - Plymouth MI
Alfred E. Lynn - Troy MI
David Jorgensen - Chelsea MI
Gang Xu - Canton MI
Assignee:
Visteon Global Technologies, Inc. - Dearborn MI
International Classification:
G01L 2700
US Classification:
73 157, 137 1, 25112916
Abstract:
A variable force solenoid valve assembly generally includes a coil, magnetic pole, armature, and one or more variable size air gaps that are disposed within the solenoid. The solenoid may be calibrated by first energizing the solenoid coils and determining a corresponding desired hydraulic pressure, measuring the actual hydraulic pressure, and adjusting the magnetic flux until the desired output pressure is achieved.

System And Method For Superframe Dithering In A Liquid Crystal Display

View page
US Patent:
6801213, Oct 5, 2004
Filed:
Feb 21, 2001
Appl. No.:
09/792041
Inventors:
Neil Bergstrom - Palo Alto CA
Dick Huston - Boulder Creek CA
Gang Xu - Cupertino CA
Assignee:
Brillian Corporation - Tempe AZ
International Classification:
G09G 502
US Classification:
345596, 345591, 345600, 345593, 345597, 345 88, 345102
Abstract:
A system and method are provided for driving a digital display adapted to depict a first number of bits per color field during each frame. In use, a second number of bits is displayed which is greater than the first number of bits. This is accomplished by alternating the display of the bits between frames. To this end, additional bits of color are displayed without increasing the number of bits per color field during each frame.

Electrode And Interconnect Materials For Mems Devices

View page
US Patent:
7369292, May 6, 2008
Filed:
May 3, 2006
Appl. No.:
11/416920
Inventors:
Gang Xu - Cupertino CA, US
Evgeni Gousev - Saratoga CA, US
Assignee:
QUALCOMM MEMS Technologies, Inc. - San Diego CA
International Classification:
G02F 1/03
G02B 26/00
US Classification:
359245, 359290
Abstract:
A microelectromechanical (MEMS) device is presented which comprises a metallized semiconductor. The metallized semiconductor can be used for conductor applications because of its low resistivity, and for transistor applications because of its semiconductor properties. In addition, the metallized semiconductor can be tuned to have optical properties which allow it to be useful for optical MEMS devices.

Systems And Methods Of Providing A Light Guiding Layer

View page
US Patent:
7619822, Nov 17, 2009
Filed:
Jan 30, 2007
Appl. No.:
11/669074
Inventors:
Russell Wayne Gruhike - Santa Clara CA, US
Mark Mienko - San Jose CA, US
Gang Xu - Cupertino CA, US
Ion Bita - San Jose CA, US
Assignee:
QUALCOMM MEMS Technologies, Inc. - San Diego CA
International Classification:
G02B 5/02
F21V 7/04
G02B 26/00
US Classification:
359599, 362600, 362603, 362609, 362610, 359291
Abstract:
Various embodiments of the invention include an interferometric optical modulator comprising a substrate layer and a light direction layer. Such an interferometric modulator may be integrated with a diffuser layer in a display device in a way that physically integrates the diffuser layer into the light direction layer in a way where the diff-user layer does not interact with light propagating within the light direction layer. As a result, most of the light propagating within the light direction layer does not penetrate into the diffuser which would inhibit performance of the display. In some embodiments, the interface between the diffuser layer and the light direction layer has a lower index of refraction than the light direction layer and the transparent substrate so that total internal reflection occurs at the interface.
