High Temperature Chlorination Catalyst

View page
US Patent:
41245342, Nov 7, 1978
Filed:
Oct 20, 1976
Appl. No.:
5/734249
Inventors:
Frederick C. Leitert - North Madison OH
Carl G. Vinson - Mentor OH
Assignee:
Diamond Shamrock Corporation - Cleveland OH
International Classification:
B01J 2710
C07C 1700
C07C 2102
C07C 2100
US Classification:
252441
Abstract:
The present invention relates to a novel catalyst system for chlorination of hydrocarbons either by oxyhydrochlorination, and/or oxychlorination. The catalyst system comprises copper chloride impregnated onto an alumina support with a metal chloride selected from the group consisting of potassium chloride, lithium chloride, cesium chloride, magnesium chloride, calcium chloride or barium chloride, said alumina support having a sodium oxide content of from 0. 2 to about 2. 0% by weight and a silica content no more than 4%.

Zero Discharge Process For Manufacturing Of Phosphorous Acid And Hypophosphorous Acid

View page
US Patent:
53688325, Nov 29, 1994
Filed:
Jun 7, 1991
Appl. No.:
7/711841
Inventors:
Harry E. Buckholtz - Lewiston NY
Mohan S. Saran - Grand Island NY
Frederick C. Leitert - Madison OH
David A. Flautt - Ashtabula OH
Assignee:
Occidental Chemical Corporation - Niagara Falls NY
International Classification:
C01B 25165
C01B 25163
US Classification:
423316
Abstract:
Disclosed is a method of making phosphorous acid or hypophosphorous acid by reacting hydrogen chloride with a sodium phosphite or a sodium hypophosphite, respectively, in the presence of water to precipitate sodium chloride crystals and form the acid. The acid is separated from the sodium chloride crystals and can be passed through an anion exchange column that is preferably loaded with phosphite or hypophosphite ions, respectively, to remove residual chloride ions.

Balanced Chlorination Process

US Patent:
43806821, Apr 19, 1983
Filed:
Feb 22, 1982
Appl. No.:
6/351219
Inventors:
Frederick C. Leitert - North Madison OH
Carl G. Vinson - Mentor OH
Assignee:
Diamond Shamrock Corporation - Dallas TX
International Classification:
C07C 17152
US Classification:
570219
Abstract:
The present invention relates to a novel process of halogenating aliphatic hydrocarbons which comprises, first non-selectively oxyhalogenating a C. sub. 2 -C. sub. 6 aliphatic hydrocarbon to a partially halogenated intermediate product having an overall avarage empirical formula in which the atomic ratio of halogen to carbon is greater than 1:1, then vapor phase halogenating said intermediate product to form an end product having an atomic ratio of carbon to hydrogen is at least 2:1; thereby selectively coproducing or consuming hydrogen chloride.

Catalyst And Process For Production Of Vcm

View page
US Patent:
41153235, Sep 19, 1978
Filed:
Oct 19, 1977
Appl. No.:
5/843721
Inventors:
Michael F. Lemanski - Euclid OH
Frederick C. Leitert - North Madison OH
Carl G. Vinson - Mentor OH
Assignee:
Diamond Shamrock Corporation - Cleveland OH
International Classification:
B01J 2380
B01J 2360
US Classification:
252455R
Abstract:
The present invention relates to a novel catalyst for production of VCM containing a salt of rhodium or platinum, a salt of iron or copper, and a salt of zinc; impregnated on an alumina, titania, zirconia, silica, or silica alumina support. The catalyst can be employed in a fixed or fluid bed reactor to adiabatically produce vinyl chloride from a feed stream containing ethylene, a source of chlorine, a source of elemental oxygen, and, optionally, ethylene dichloride.
