A laser configuration is disclosed wherein the active region is of annular cylindrical form. Zero mode azimuth coupling which produces an output beam of low obscuration ratio in the near field, thereby providing a single lobe in the far field, is achieved by the use of an unstable optical resonator characterized by an annular mirror defining one end of the resonator and a two stage axiconic reflector disposed optically between the opposite ends of the resonator.

An opto-electronic integrated circuit contains a coupler and one or two detector/receivers which may be on a silicon substrate which permits "blind" attachment of optical fibers by means of precision grooves and vertical cuts. Attachment of optical fibers to Optical Electronic Integrated Circuits on silicon substrates is accomplished by utilizing precision grooves combined with a vertical waveguide interface formed mechanically or electrochemically. The optical fiber must be prepared with a perpendicular end face.
