Multifunction Interface Facility Connecting Wideband Multiple Access Subscriber Loops With Various Networks

View page
US Patent:
6363079, Mar 26, 2002
Filed:
Dec 31, 1997
Appl. No.:
09/001422
Inventors:
Farhad Barzegar - Hillsborough NJ
Irwin Gerszberg - Kendall Park NJ
Philip Andrew Treventi - Murray Hill NJ
Assignee:
ATT Corp. - New York NY
International Classification:
H04J 316
US Classification:
370465, 370254, 370264
Abstract:
An device, called a facilities management platform (FMP) connects current digital and analog carrier networks and packet switched networks of interexchange carriers with high speed multiple access subscriber links implemented over twisted pair lines. The subscriber line is terminated by an access module containing one or more modems. In preferred embodiments, the modems are high-speed digital tethered virtual radio channel or xDSL modems. The FMP interface applies and receives signaling and voice through a digital loop carrier (DLC) via a multiplexer connected directly to the DLC backplane. The multiplexer is controlled by a controller of an access module. It translates data from the subscriber link to the form compatible with the digital backplane to create the appearance of one or more line cards. The FMP also may contain a sound generator to allow it to handle calls through an analog carrier network. The FMP, through the same access module transmits data to and from the modems directly through connected digital networks, such as ATM or SONET, of an interexchange carrier.

Dual Image-Reject Mixer Receiver For Multiple Channel Reception And Processing

View page
US Patent:
6397051, May 28, 2002
Filed:
Dec 21, 1998
Appl. No.:
09/217924
Inventors:
Salman Yousef Abbasi - Clifton NJ
Farhad Barzegar - Hillsborough NJ
Jeremiah Okoro - Landing NJ
Assignee:
ATT Corporation - New York NY
International Classification:
H04B 110
US Classification:
455295, 455207, 455296, 455313
Abstract:
A system and method in which a dual image-reject mixer arrangement receives an RF signal having at least one channel. The dual image-reject mixer arrangement generates first and second signals corresponding to each channel of the RF signal. Each first and second signal includes a desired signal, an image frequency signal and an intermodulation signal. A feed-forward arrangement receives the first and second signals corresponding to each channel and outputs a third signal that is formed by constructively combining the desired signals corresponding to each channel and substantially cancelling the intermodulation signals corresponding to each channel. An in-phase and quadrature hybrid network receives the third signal and outputs an in-phase baseband signal and a quadrature baseband signal corresponding to each channel of the RF signal. A controller is coupled to the dual image-reject mixer arrangement and monitors the first and second signals, and controls an amplitude and a phase of the image frequency signals so that the image frequency signals are collectively minimized based on the monitored first and second signals. The controller is also coupled to the feed-forward arrangement and monitors the third signal.

Abstract:
Embodiments of the invention include a system and method for providing high quality voice/sound communications over a local loop of a telephone network. The method aspect of the invention comprises receiving a voice signal, digitizing the voice signal into a high quality voice signal, utilizing sampling rates greater than 8000 samples per second and/or sample sizes greater than 8 bits per sample, negotiating voice processing characteristics between a customer premises equipment and a network element such as a softswitch, receiving speech from a user at a customer premises equipment according to the negotiation, converting the received speech into high bandwidth signal and transmitting the high bandwidth signal to a telephone local loop, transmitting the high bandwidth signal from the local loop to wideband node that packetizes the high bandwidth signal for transmission to a packet network and receiving the packetized signal from the packet network at a switch that switches between an on-network or off-network status. A voice over IP platform may also be used to route packetized signals from the packet network to either the telephone network or another packet network.

Abstract:
A method and apparatus for mechanizing the currently manual ADSL loop testing process is disclosed. In one embodiment, an automated loop testing device is disclosed, where the loop testing device has a pair of terminals, e. g. , RJ-11 jacks on both sides of the device. The jack on one side connects to inside wiring which, in turn, connects to an ADSL modem. The other jack connects to an outside line which, in turn, connects to a central office of a network provider. In operation, the present device detects a line voltage reversal and then disconnects the input line to the ADSL Modem. When the voltage returns to normal, then the device behaves normally by being closed, essentially acting as a pass through device and again connects the input lines to the output lines.
