Method For Providing Time Discrimination In The World Wide Web

View page
US Patent:
6470269, Oct 22, 2002
Filed:
Aug 20, 1999
Appl. No.:
09/377697
Inventors:
Eytan Adar - Foster City CA
Bernardo A. Huberman - Palo Alto CA
Assignee:
Xerox Corporation - Stamford CT
International Classification:
G06F 1516
US Classification:
701219
Abstract:
A method for providing time discrimination in the World Wide Web. The method includes the steps of creating a computational model of users of the World Wide Web that represents aggregate World Wide Web surfing patterns; using the computational model to determine a first number of clicks that an user goes through in a specific type of query entered by the user in a conventional web search engine; using the computational model to determine a second number of clicks that the user goes through in the specific type of query entered by the user in an optimized web search engine; and subtracting the first number of clicks from the second number of clicks to extract the gain obtained by time discrimination.

System And Method For Searching And Recommending Documents In A Collection Using Share Bookmarks

View page
US Patent:
6493702, Dec 10, 2002
Filed:
May 5, 1999
Appl. No.:
09/305844
Inventors:
Eytan Adar - Foster City CA
Thomas M. Breuel - San Jose CA
Todd A. Cass - San Francisco CA
James E. Pitkow - Palo Alto CA
Hinrich Schuetze - San Francisco CA
Assignee:
Xerox Corporation - Stamford CT
International Classification:
G06F 1730
US Classification:
707 3
Abstract:
A search and recommendation system employs the preferences and profiles of individual users and groups within a community of users, as well as information derived from shared document bookmarks, to augment Internet searches, re-rank search results, and provide recommendations for documents based on a subject-matter query. The search and recommendation system operates in the context of a shared bookmark manager, which stores individual users bookmarks (some of which may be published or shared for group use) on a centralized bookmark database connected to the Internet. The shared bookmark manager is implemented as a distributed program, portions of which operate on users terminals and other portions of which operate on the centralized bookmark database.

System And Method For Automated Message Response, Within A System For Harvesting Community Knowledge

View page
US Patent:
6915284, Jul 5, 2005
Filed:
Apr 18, 2002
Appl. No.:
10/125829
Inventors:
Eytan Adar - Palo Alto CA, US
Rajan Mathew Lukose - Palo Alto CA, US
Joshua Rogers Tyler - Stanford CA, US
Caesar Sengupta - Los Altos CA, US
Assignee:
Hewlett-Packard Development Company, LP. - Houston TX
International Classification:
G06F017/00
G09B019/00
US Classification:
706 45, 434118
Abstract:
A system and method for automated message response within a system for knowledge management is disclosed. The method discloses the steps of: identifying a set of information resources; profiling the information resources; monitoring a transmitted message; scoring the monitored message with respect to the information resource profiles; querying an information resource with content from the monitored message, if that information resource's score exceeds a predetermined threshold; receiving a set of query responses from the information resources; generating a response to the monitored message from the query responses; and responding to the monitored message with the message response. The system of the present invention, discloses means for implementing the method.

Method And System For Building An Abbreviation Dictionary

View page
US Patent:
7136876, Nov 14, 2006
Filed:
Mar 3, 2003
Appl. No.:
10/379003
Inventors:
Eytan Adar - Menlo Park CA, US
Lada A. Adamic - Palo Alto CA, US
Assignee:
Hewlett-Packard Development Company, L.P. - Houston TX
International Classification:
G06F 17/30
US Classification:
7071041, 707 6, 715532, 704209, 704265
Abstract:
A method and apparatus for building an abbreviation dictionary involves searching through a set of source documents. The abbreviations having likely definitions are identified and the definitions extracted from the document. The definitions having identical associated abbreviations are grouped together. The definition groups are each arranged into clusters based on an n-gram or other combinatorial method to determine similar definition. Further disambiguation is provided by looking at similarity between clusters using an annotation associated with the source documents from which the definitions were extracted.

User Profile Classification By Web Usage Analysis

View page
US Patent:
7162522, Jan 9, 2007
Filed:
Nov 2, 2001
Appl. No.:
10/033586
Inventors:
Eytan Adar - Palo Alto CA, US
Lada A. Adamic - Los Altos CA, US
Francine R. Chen - Menlo Park CA, US
Assignee:
Xerox Corporation - Stamford CT
International Classification:
G06F 15/173
G06F 7/00
US Classification:
709224, 707 6
Abstract:
Demographic information of an Internet user is predicted based on an analysis of accessed web pages. Web pages accessed by the Internet user are detected and mapped to a user path vector which is converted to a normalized weighted user path vector. A centroid vector identifies web page access patterns of users with a shared user profile attribute. The user profile attribute is assigned to the Internet user based on a comparison of the vectors. Bias values are also assigned to a set of web pages and a user profile attribute can be predicted for an Internet user based on the bias values of web pages accessed by the user. User attributes can also be predicted based on the results of an expectation maximization process. Demographic information can be predicted based on the combined results of a vector comparison, bias determination, or expectation maximization process.
