Plural Layered Coated Abrasive

View page
US Patent:
46447032, Feb 24, 1987
Filed:
Mar 12, 1986
Appl. No.:
6/839243
Inventors:
Wesley R. Kaczmarek - Malta NY
Eugene Zador - Clifton Park NY
Sitaramaiah Ravipati - Colonie NY
Assignee:
Norton Company - Worcester MA
International Classification:
B24D 1100
US Classification:
51401
Abstract:
A coated abrasive which is advantageous for certain applications has at least two distinct layers of abrasive grits: a coarse outer layer and a finer inner layer. The median particle size of the grits in the outer layer is at least 150% of that of the inner layer grits. The grits may be adhered to the backing with adhesives compounded primarily of acrylates and cured by exposure to UV light. A product made in this way is effective for one step fining of plastic ophthalmic lenses.

Curl Resistant Coated Abrasive Backing With Radiation Curable Cloth Finishing Additive

View page
US Patent:
54569753, Oct 10, 1995
Filed:
Apr 3, 1991
Appl. No.:
7/681442
Inventors:
Eugene Zador - Clifton Park NY
Dhiraj H. Darjee - Malta NY
Stanley J. Supkis - Sand Lake NY
Assignee:
Norton Company - Worcester MA
International Classification:
B32B 502
US Classification:
428241
Abstract:
This invention relates to the construction of backings for coated abrasive products that avoid curling tendencies during adhesive curing and subsequent steps. Curling of the backing is discouraged by the utilization of at least one finishing material carried by said fabric which comprises the product of a reaction between an unsaturated hexafunctional acrylated urethane oligomer component and an unsaturated carboxyfunctional monomer component. These components are caused to react with one another to form cross linking when exposed to actinic or electron beam radiation.

Patterned Coated Abrasive For Fine Surface Finishing

View page
US Patent:
50144685, May 14, 1991
Filed:
May 5, 1989
Appl. No.:
7/347663
Inventors:
Sitaramaiah Ravipati - Latham NY
Eugene Zador - Ballston Lake NY
Wesley R. Kaczmarek - Ballston Lake NY
Ernest A. Coleman - Stamford CT
David Rostoker - Sturbridge MA
Assignee:
Norton Company - Worcester MA
International Classification:
B24B 100
US Classification:
51295
Abstract:
Coated abrasive material for fine finishing applications including second fining ophthalmic application, having patterned surface coating of abrasive grains dispersed in radiation-cured adhesive binder. The patterned surface coating is defined by a plurality of formations of such abrasive/binder each having an inner bottom edge defining an area devoid of coated abrasive, a top edge defining a somewhat larger area devoid of coated abrasive and an inner wall connecting the top and bottom edges.

Coated Abrasives With Rapidly Curable Adhesives And Controllable Curvature

View page
US Patent:
46421262, Feb 10, 1987
Filed:
Feb 11, 1985
Appl. No.:
6/700372
Inventors:
Eugene Zador - Ballston Lake NY
Wesley R. Kaczmarek - Burnt Hills NY
Sitaramaiah Ravipati - Latham NY
Assignee:
Norton Company - Worcester MA
International Classification:
B24D 1102
US Classification:
51295
Abstract:
Previous coated abrasives with adhesives suited to rapid, UV light initiated cure often had intractable curl problems. Therefore, such coated abrasives have been unsuited to precision finishing of workpieces with strict flatness or other curvature requirements, such as read-write heads for magnetic recorders or computer memories. This invention provides coated abrasives, having adhesives with cure initiated by UV light, which are suited to curvature control by the methods used conventionally for magnetic recording media. The preferred adhesive formulations include reaction products of 2-hydroxyethyl acrylate with polyol polyester oligomers capped with isocyanate end groups, alkoxylated diacrylated monomers, and N-vinyl pyrrolidone and other monomers with only one polymerizable unsaturated double bond per molecule, and sometimes also include nonpolymerizable thermoplastic polymers. The adhesives, with abrasives grain dispersed therein, are milled in special mills combining the actions of small milling media with large scale high speed agitation to reduce their viscosity to a workable level for gravure roll coating. The dispersion is then coated on plastic film backings and cured with UV lamps having a high spectral output in the near UV, the backing being kept cool during cure by contact with a cooled metal roll.

Abstract:
Coated abrasive material having a combination backing member. The combination backing member has as a bottom member a conventional backing member substrate used in the manufacture of coated abrasive material such as cylinder paper coated with a polymeric layer. The polymer layer provides a relatively smooth surface for application of the maker coat during manufacture of the coated abrasive material. The coated abrasive member can be used in diverse applications such as the fine finishing of particle board and offhand grinding of automobile body seams.
