US Patent:
47160837, Dec 29, 1987
Filed:
Sep 23, 1983
Appl. No.:
6/535352
Inventors:
Erwin Eichen - West Bloomfield MI
James D. Flasck - Rochester MI
Assignee:
Ovonic Synthetic Materials Company - Troy MI
International Classification:
B32B 900
B32B 1518
C23C 1400
US Classification:
428457
Abstract:
A coating and method of depositing it is provided. The wear resistant coating comprises a thin layer of disordered boron and carbon applied to a substrate. The coating has good adherence and provides good resistance to wear so that it is useful as a tool coating. In a more specific embodiment, the coating is disordered boron carbide. The coating can have a high gloss and can also be used as a decorative coating. The coating can be made by sputtering boron and carbon onto a substrate. A bias voltage may be applied to the substrate during sputtering. In accordance with one embodiment, the disordered boron and carbon coating is of a composition B. sub. x C. sub. 1-x where x is from about 0. 60 to about 0. 90.

Cross Head For Internal Combustion Engine

US Patent:
45949735, Jun 17, 1986
Filed:
Jun 24, 1985
Appl. No.:
6/748281
Inventors:
David Allred - Troy MI
Erwin Eichen - West Bloomfield MI
James Flasck - Rochester MI
Assignee:
Energy Conversion Devices, Inc. - Troy MI
International Classification:
F01L 118
US Classification:
123 9040
Abstract:
Disclosed is a valve cross head adapted for mechanically translating valve opening impulses from the rocker arm of an internal combustion engine to the valve stem of the internal combustion engine. The cross head has a metal body portion and a ceramic wear pad. The ceramic wear pad includes a chemical vapor deposited transition metal film on the surface thereof whereby to permit adhesion thereof by brazing or soldering between the wear pad and the body portion.

US Patent:
45942943, Jun 10, 1986
Filed:
Oct 9, 1984
Appl. No.:
6/658831
Inventors:
Erwin Eichen - West Bloomfield MI
James Flasck - Rochester MI
Assignee:
Energy Conversion Devices, Inc. - Troy MI
International Classification:
B22F 500
US Classification:
428552
Abstract:
A wear resistant multilayer coating is provided. The wear resistant coating comprises at least one internal layer and a thin, external layer of disordered boron and carbon applied to a substrate. The synergistic interaction of a hard internal layer and a lubricious boron and carbon layer provides a long lived tool coating. In a more specific embodiment, the external layer of the coating is disordered boron carbide. In accordance with one embodiment, the disordered boron and carbon external coating is of a composition B. sub. x C. sub. 1-x where x is from about 0. 60 to about 0. 90.
