Apparatus For Applying An Axial Force To Well Pipe Slips

View page
US Patent:
8573312, Nov 5, 2013
Filed:
Dec 23, 2010
Appl. No.:
12/977173
Inventors:
Errol A Sonnier - Broussard LA, US
Assignee:
Tesco Corporation - Houston TX
International Classification:
E21B 19/00
US Classification:
166382, 166 7752, 166 771, 166 882
Abstract:
An apparatus for gripping a string of well pipe being lowered into or retrieved from a well includes pipe slips defining a central bore opening having an axis. The pipe slips are configured to abut and grip a surface of a pipe passing through the central bore opening while the pipe slips are in a first position. The pipe slips are further configured to allow axial movement of the pipe when moved to a second position. The apparatus includes at least one hydraulic ram device configured to exert an axial force on the pipe slips while the pipe slips are in the first position to enhance gripping of the pipe.

Control Line Installation Unit

US Patent:
20120031627, Feb 9, 2012
Filed:
Aug 3, 2011
Appl. No.:
13/197433
Inventors:
Errol A. Sonnier - Broussard LA, US
Assignee:
Tesco Corporation - Houston TX
International Classification:
E21B 19/00
E21B 19/22
US Classification:
166379, 166 771
Abstract:
A tubing installer runs a string of tubing into a well while strapping a control line to the tubing string. The installer includes a base having a tubular connector extending downward for connection to an upper end of a blowout preventer. Hydraulic cylinders are mounted to and extend upward from the base. A support floor having support slips is mounted to the hydraulic cylinders at a fixed distance above the base. A traveling slip base containing traveling slips is mounted to upper ends of piston rods of the hydraulic cylinders. A pipe lifting assembly is supported by the base for lifting and positioning an additional joint of tubing to be added to the string of tubing. A pipe make-up mechanism is supported by the base for rotating the additional joint into threaded engagement with the string of tubing. A control line supply source for supplies control line to and alongside the string of tubing at a point between the base and the support floor.

Tubular Compensator System And Method

View page
US Patent:
20130146304, Jun 13, 2013
Filed:
Dec 8, 2011
Appl. No.:
13/314923
Inventors:
Errol Anthony Sonnier - Broussard LA, US
Assignee:
TESCO CORPORATION - Houston TX
International Classification:
E21B 19/16
US Classification:
166380, 166 7751
Abstract:
Present embodiments are directed a stand compensator system. The stand compensator system includes gripping device configured to engage a tubular element by coupling about an outer circumference of the tubular element. Additionally, the tubular compensator system includes a plurality of resilient roller assemblies positioned proximate an inner perimeter of the gripping device, wherein the resilient roller assemblies include rollers arranged to engage with an abutting surface of the tubular element. Further, the stand compensator system includes engagement arms coupled with the gripping device, wherein the engagement arms are configured to hold the gripping device in position above a tubular elevator and couple between rig bails extending from the tubular elevator.

Pipe Running System And Method

View page
US Patent:
62796623, Aug 28, 2001
Filed:
Mar 9, 1999
Appl. No.:
9/265318
Inventors:
Errol A. Sonnier - Broussard LA
International Classification:
E21B 1906
US Classification:
166380
Abstract:
A conventional center-latch elevator with smooth slip segments of the present invention is employed to grip and suspend a pipe without damaging the pipe surface. The slip segments are made of aluminum or another material that is softer than the material of the pipe. The elimination of rough surfaces on the slip segments prevents damage to the external pipe surface. A threaded lift connector is secured to the box end of the pipe to be lifted. The lift connector forces spring-loaded slip segments down into the conical bowl of the elevator to move the segments radially inwardly into gripping engagement with the pipe. The axial forces exerted by the elevator against the bottom of the lift connector are transmitted through the connector to the threads engaged in the pipe. The arrangement prevents the forces of the elevator from being transmitted to the base of the coupling connected to the pipe to prevent coupling damage or disengagement of the coupling from the threaded pipe end. The lift connector may be employed with a coupling-type elevator that closely surrounds the pipe and engages the bottom of the lift connector when the elevator is raised to raise the pipe.

Pipe Gripping System And Method

View page
US Patent:
57329095, Mar 31, 1998
Filed:
Jun 26, 1996
Appl. No.:
8/670640
Inventors:
Errol A. Sonnier - Broussard LA
International Classification:
F16L 318
US Classification:
248 49
Abstract:
A slip die with a substantially smooth pipe contact surface is employed in a conventional slip assembly as a primary mechanism for gripping pipe. A second conventional slip assembly with conventional dies having penetrating die teeth on their contact surfaces is employed as a secondary gripping mechanism to automatically grip the pipe in the event the primary mechanism loses its grip. The smooth slip elements are constructed of a malleable material which tends to conform to surface irregularities on the outer surface of the pipe to increase the gripping force on the pipe. In the method, the pipe is initially gripped by the primary slip mechanism before the secondary mechanism is actuated to contact the pipe. The slips are set by downward pipe forces acting on the dies so that the die teeth of the secondary mechanism do not grip the pipe unless the primary slip mechanism fails. The system and method permit the pipe to be gripped without producing damaging die teeth marks on the pipe during normal pipe handling operations while providing a secondary mechanism which will automatically grip the pipe if the primary gripping mechanism fails.

System, Apparatus, And Method For Installing Control Lines In A Well

View page
US Patent:
61316644, Oct 17, 2000
Filed:
Sep 24, 1999
Appl. No.:
9/404948
Inventors:
Errol A. Sonnier - Lafayette LA
International Classification:
E21B 1902
US Classification:
166381
Abstract:
A method and apparatus for installing control lines and pipe into a well. The work surface for equipment and personnel employed in assembling the pipe is elevated above the rig floor. Personnel operating below the work surface use clamps to attach control lines to the pipe being installed in the well. The pipe-holding spiders that arc normally mounted on the rig floor are mounted on the elevated work surface. Assembling the control lines to the pipe below the work surface permits the control lines to be attached to the pipe without first traveling through the spider.
