Process For The Surface Treatment Of Polymers For Reinforcement-To-Rubber Adhesion

View page
US Patent:
50532464, Oct 1, 1991
Filed:
Mar 30, 1990
Appl. No.:
7/501564
Inventors:
Derek Shuttleworth - Munroe Falls OH
Syed K. Mowdood - Madison CT
Walter H. Waddell - Fairlawn OH
Jimmy L. Richards - Cuyahoga Falls OH
Eilert A. Ofstead - Cuyahoga Falls OH
Jerry L. Brenner - Copley OH
Assignee:
The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company - Akron OH
International Classification:
B05D 306
B05D 136
B05D 700
US Classification:
427 40
Abstract:
This invention is directed to treating the surfaces of rubber-reinforcing materials with a gas plasma of O. sub. 2 and CF. sub. 4 to activate the surfaces to make them more receptive to adhesives. Optionally the surfaces of the reinforcing materials may be exposed to a polymerizing gas plasma such as a thio-carbon to coat the surfaces of the reinforcing material with substances that promote adhesion to rubber. The treated surfaces have been shown to adhere directly to rubber when vulcanized in the normal fashion.
