Pneumatic Deicer And Deicing Method

View page
US Patent:
45167451, May 14, 1985
Filed:
Sep 30, 1982
Appl. No.:
6/431952
Inventors:
Duain N. Ely - Uniontown OH
Joseph H. Macarchenia - Tallmadge OH
Assignee:
B. F. Goodrich Company - New York NY
International Classification:
B64D 1518
US Classification:
244134A
Abstract:
An inflatable deicer boot for mounting on an airfoil with at least one leading edge tubular member positioned in the area of the stagnation line of the airfoil. The boot also has a plurality of upper and lower inflatable passages on either side of the leading edge tubular member. In the inflation sequence of the deicing cycle, the leading edge tubular member is inflated before inflation of the upper and lower inflatable passages to crack the ice formed on the outside surface of the boot at the stagnation line of the airfoil. The upper and lower inflatable passages are then inflated to shatter and eject the ice formed on the boot over the upper and lower inflatable passages. Means are then provided to deflate the tubular member for a predetermined time after which the deicing cycle is repeated.

Pneumatic Deicer

US Patent:
47798238, Oct 25, 1988
Filed:
Nov 12, 1986
Appl. No.:
6/929682
Inventors:
Duain N. Ely - Uniontown OH
Joseph H. Macarchenia - Tallmadge OH
Assignee:
The B. F. Goodrich Company - Akron OH
International Classification:
B64D 1518
US Classification:
244134A
Abstract:
A deicer pad for use on an airfoil wherein the airfoil has a leading edge and a stagnation line. The deicer pad is constructed to have an intermediate portion or region and two spaced apart portions or regions and with inflatable passageways only located on or within the two spaced apart portions. The pad is mounted on the airfoil so that the intermediate portion which is non-extensible or non-stretchable overlies the leading edge and the stagnation line of the airfoil. The stagnation line is generally parallel to the leading edge of the airfoil. The passageways in the two spaced apart portions of the deicer are inflatable either simultaneously or in seriatim order and effect the breaking up of the ice over the entire deicer. The inflatable passageways are the sole means for deicing.

Pneumatic De-Icer Having Improved Aerodynamic Characteristics

US Patent:
54491339, Sep 12, 1995
Filed:
Jul 30, 1993
Appl. No.:
8/100520
Inventors:
Duain N. Ely - Uniontown OH
Joseph H. Macarchenia - Tallmadge OH
Assignee:
The B. F. Goodrich Company - Akron OH
International Classification:
B64D 1516
US Classification:
244134A
Abstract:
A de-icer for attachment to an airfoil subject to impingement by an airstream. The airstream induces a stagnation line near the leading edge of the airfoil. The de-icer has inflatable passages that are parallel to the airstream overlying the airfoil on one side of the stagnation line, and inflatable passages that are parallel to the leading edge overlying the airfoil on the other side of the stagnation line. The de-icer maintains the aerodynamic characteristics of the airfoil during de-icer inflation. A method of manufacturing the de-icer is also provided.
