Atmospheric-Particle Analyzer

View page
US Patent:
60405740, Mar 21, 2000
Filed:
Mar 5, 1998
Appl. No.:
9/035048
Inventors:
John T. Jayne - Littleton MA
Douglas R. Worsnop - Lexington MA
Charles E. Kolb - Sudbury MA
Assignee:
Aerodyne Research, Inc. - Billerica MA
International Classification:
H01J 4904
US Classification:
250288
Abstract:
The principle object of the invention is to provide an improved particle analyzer for analyzing particles contained in a gaseous medium. A more specific object is to provide a particle analyzer that provides a measure of the concentration of particles of various sizes in the atmosphere and the make up of the particles of various sizes. A more specific object is to provide an analyzer of the foregoing type which is small inexpensive and suitable for unattended use in the field.

Method And Device For Ionizing Particles Of A Sample Gas Flow

View page
US Patent:
20160126079, May 5, 2016
Filed:
Jun 11, 2014
Appl. No.:
14/897690
Inventors:
- University of Helsinki, FI
Heikki Junninen - Helsinki, FI
Douglas Worsnop - Billerica MA, US
International Classification:
H01J 49/14
H01J 49/26
H01J 49/12
Abstract:
A device for ionizing sample particles of a sample gas flow comprises a first flow tube for providing the sample gas flow, and an introducing means for providing HSOmolecules to an interaction region. In addition the device comprises a generator for producing reagent primary ions from particles of candidate reagent gas flow essentially in a primary ion production region. The device is configured to introduce said reagent primary ions with HSOmolecules in said interaction region in order to arrange interaction between the reagent primary ions and the HSOmolecules, thereby producing HSO ions and again to produce HSO4 ion clusters comprising HSO ions and at least two HSOmolecules via interactions of HSO with other HSOmolecules in said interaction region. Furthermore the device is configured to introduce said HSO ion clusters with the sample particles of the sample gas flow in order to provide reactions between said HSO ion clusters and the sample particles, and thereby provide a sample cluster comprising the HSO ion clusters and said base sample to be determined.

Particle Capture Device

US Patent:
20150040689, Feb 12, 2015
Filed:
Aug 7, 2013
Appl. No.:
13/961469
Inventors:
- Billerica MA, US
Douglas R. Worsnop - Lexington MA, US
Assignee:
Aerodyne Research, Inc. - Billerica MA
International Classification:
G01N 1/44
G01N 1/28
US Classification:
7386311, 73864
Abstract:
In example embodiments, particle collection efficiency in aerosol analyzers and other particle measuring instruments is improved by a particle capture device that employs multiple collisions to decrease momentum of particles until the particles are collected (e.g., vaporized or come to rest). The particle collection device includes an aperture through which a focused particle beam enters. A collection enclosure is coupled to the aperture and has one or more internal surfaces against which particles of the focused beam collide. One or more features are employed in the collection enclosure to promote particles to collide multiple times within the enclosure, and thereby be vaporized or come to rest, rather than escape through the aperture.
