Choke Assemblies For Shotguns

View page
US Patent:
47139030, Dec 22, 1987
Filed:
Jun 2, 1986
Appl. No.:
6/869351
Inventors:
Donald R. Mainland - Racine WI
Assignee:
Kolar Arms - Racine WI
International Classification:
F41C 2110
F41C 2700
US Classification:
42 79
Abstract:
Two types of choke assemblies are provided to enable a shotgun of specific gauge to be modified in the field to receive a shotgun shell of smaller gauge and also to provide a choke of desired characteristics to suit the needs of the shooter, as for skeet or trap shooting or hunting. Each choke assembly comprises an aluminum tube insertable into the breech end of the shotgun barrel and has integral external bosses to ensure a snug fit. The breech end of the tube is chambered to receive a shotgun shell and the muzzle end of the tube is internally threaded. In one type of choke assembly, a choke is screwed and glued in the threaded tube end at the factory and the entire assembly is installed in the shotgun in the field. Thus, with a plurality of tubes of the same gauge, each would have a different choke permanently attached. In the other type of choke assembly, a hollow threaded adapter is screwed and glued in the threaded tube end at the factory and chokes of various types are threadedly and removably attachable to the adapter on the tube in the field.

Single Barrel Break-Action Trap Shotgun

View page
US Patent:
49642324, Oct 23, 1990
Filed:
Aug 30, 1989
Appl. No.:
7/400725
Inventors:
Donald R. Mainland - Racine WI
Keith J. Sprangers - Racine WI
Assignee:
U. S. Competition Arms, Inc. - Racine WI
International Classification:
F41C 711
US Classification:
42 44
Abstract:
The trap gun stock has a projection which mates snugly with a complementary-shaped depression in the rear end of the receiver and is secured therein by a spring-loaded stock bolt which extends through the stock and screws into a stud on the receiver. A latch on the fore-end iron engages a barrel lug to releasably secure the barrel to the fore-end iron. An adjustment shoe at the edge of a latch-hole in the fore-end iron engages the barrel lug to ensure precise barrel positioning. A plastic, resilient, low-friction, heat-resistant stabilizing insert fixed to the fore-end wood engages the barrel to facilitate fitting the barrel in non-contacting relationship in a groove in the fore-end wood handgrip. An extractor/ejector mechanism on the barrel and on the fore-end iron operates when the gun is opened to partially extend an unfired shell or to fully eject an empty shell casing. The fire control mechanism is cocked by opening the gun after the action has been unlocked.

Shotgun Shell Ejector/Extractor Means For Skeet Gun Carrier Barrel Having Smaller Gauge Tube Therein

View page
US Patent:
50182935, May 28, 1991
Filed:
Sep 27, 1989
Appl. No.:
7/413461
Inventors:
Donald R. Mainland - Racine WI
Assignee:
Kolars Arms - Racine WI
International Classification:
F41A 2110
US Classification:
42 77
Abstract:
A detachable large-bore regular barrel of a shotgun is replaced by a light-weight, thin-walled, carrier barrel having a bore in which a smaller-bore tube and an adapter are mounted. This enables the shotgun to fire a smaller-gauge shotgun shell without changing the weight and balance of the gun, since the combined weight of the carrier barrel, tube and adapter matches that of the regular barrel and those parts are designed to provide the same balance. The carrier barrel is provided with the same kind of shell ejector/extractor as the regular barrel. The adapter comprises a tubular member which defines a firing chamber for the smaller-gauge shotgun shell and is disposed in the breech end of the carrier barrel bore, being threadedly connected to the tube therein. The tubular member of the adapter prevents inadvertent insertion of a larger gauge shotgun shell into the carrier barrel and thus provides a safety feature. The adapter further comprises a slidable component which is slidably mounted on the breech end of the tubular member and engages a flange on the base end of the smaller gauge shotgun shell in the firing chamber of the tubular member.
