Three Degree Of Freedom Mechanism For Input Devices

View page
US Patent:
6580418, Jun 17, 2003
Filed:
Feb 29, 2000
Appl. No.:
09/515967
Inventors:
Donald C. Grome - Edmonds WA
Kurt T. Nielsen - Mukilteo WA
Assignee:
Microsoft Corporation - Redmond WA
International Classification:
G09G 508
US Classification:
345161
Abstract:
A joystick produces a control input signal in response to a pivotal displacement of a control handle about any of a plurality of axes. Corrected signals for each of orthogonal âXâ and âYâ axes are provided in response to a pivotal displacement of the control handle about a center point disposed within a housing. Rotation of the control handle about the center point is enabled through use of a pair of members having spherical exterior surfaces sharing a common center. The member includes a hemispherical-shaped shell coupled to the control handle shaft, and an end cap defining a spherical surface disposed at the end of the control handle shaft. The control handle shaft extends into the housing through an opening defined in an upper portion of the housing. The opening provides a bearing surface adapted to slidingly engage the spherical upper surface of the hemispherical-shaped shell. The housing further includes a lower portion with a receiver adapted to slidingly engage the end cap.

Abstract:
A digital camera pedestal with cable in neck is provided which may comprise a base member, a neck, and a camera housing. The base member can comprise a surface mount, a cable exit annulus, and a neck mount. The surface mount and said neck mount can attach together forming an interior cavity. A cable enters the cavity through the neck mount, and exits through the cable exit annulus. An annular neck member is rotatably attached to the neck mount, such that it can rotate in a vertical plane, and a camera housing member is in turn rotatably attached to the neck member, where the housing member can rotate in a horizontal plane.

System And Method For Creating Movement Utilizing A Servo Mechanism With A Self-Aligning Clutch

View page
US Patent:
60325488, Mar 7, 2000
Filed:
Aug 8, 1997
Appl. No.:
8/907473
Inventors:
Leonardo Del Castillo - Redmond WA
Donald Charles Grome - Edmonds WA
Jeffery Mark Reents - Woodstock GA
Harjit Singh - Redmond WA
International Classification:
F16H 2900
B25J 900
US Classification:
74 8919
Abstract:
A system for providing self-alignment of an appendage or other movable part comprising an input device, a self-aligning clutch, a processor, a feedback sensor, and a timer. The input device drives a set of gears including a partial output gear. The self-aligning clutch is coupled to the output gear and moves the appendage in response to the rotational motion of the output gear. The self-aligning clutch includes a flexible link for transferring energy from the output gear to the appendage and for maintaining the relative alignment between the appendage and the output gear. When an obstruction prevents the appendage from moving to the desired position, the flexible link stores energy. After the obstruction is removed, the flexible link releases the stored energy to move the appendage so that the relative alignment between the output gear and the appendage is maintained. The self-aligning clutch prevents damage to the servo when an external force is applied to the appendage.

Door Closure Mechanism

View page
US Patent:
50201891, Jun 4, 1991
Filed:
Apr 16, 1990
Appl. No.:
7/514929
Inventors:
Donald C. Grome - Edmonds WA
Kurt H. Lundstedt - Long Grove IL
William Olson - Barrington IL
Assignee:
Illinois Tool Works Inc. - Glenview IL
International Classification:
E05F 108
US Classification:
16286
Abstract:
A door closure mechanism for use upon a door of a cabinet includes a housing formed from two co-mating first and second members, a drive cam rotatably mounted within the housing, a cam follower mounted within the housing for reciprocating movement relative to the drive cam, and a coil spring mounted within the housing for resiliently biasing the cam follower in a reciprocal manner against the drive cam. The drive cam is formed with cam surfaces which radially engage the cam follower so as to control the relative reciprocal movement of the cam follower with respect to the drive cam. As a safety feature, ther is provided a set of spring pre-load clips which engage the ends of the coil spring so as to prevent full decompression of the coil spring in the event of a housing failure.

Apparatus For Dispensing Comestibles Having A Reversible Piston Rod Assembly

View page
US Patent:
50525930, Oct 1, 1991
Filed:
Dec 28, 1989
Appl. No.:
7/457319
Inventors:
Donald C. Grome - Edmonds WA
Paul P. Kolada - Bexley OH
Rainer B. Teufel - Columbus OH
Assignee:
Hamilton Beach/Proctor-Silex, Inc. - Glen Allen VA
International Classification:
B65D 8854
US Classification:
222333
Abstract:
A battery-operated apparatus for dispensing comestibles has a housing to which a comestibles-receiving barrel is removably connected. A removable piston is nonrotatably slidable within the barrel and pushed through the barrel by a piston rod nonrotatably connected to the piston and slidably received within the housing. The piston rod has external screw threads over a substantial portion of its length which are engaged by internal threads of an encircling drive nut. A drive member rotatably mounted in the housing and having a through-bore for slidably receiving the piston rod is provided for rotating the drive nut. The piston rod and the drive nut constitute a reversible assembly so that, following use, the barrel and the piston may be removed from the housing for cleaning and the piston rod with the drive nut thereon may be removed from the housing, turned upside-down, and reinserted into the housing ready for another use. Portions of the piston rod are unthreaded to prevent overtravel, and resilient stop members on the piston rod push the drive nut onto the threaded portion of the piston rod at each end of its travel to assure a threaded connection when the piston rod is reversed.
