Methods And Systems To Convert A Pulse Power Demand To A Constant Power Draw

View page
US Patent:
20130147444, Jun 13, 2013
Filed:
Jun 26, 2012
Appl. No.:
13/532891
Inventors:
Deanna K. Temkin - Silver Spring MD, US
Assignee:
THE JOHNS HOPKINS UNIVERSITY - Baltimore MD
International Classification:
G05F 1/10
US Classification:
323234
Abstract:
Methods and systems to translate a pulse power demand of a pulse load to a constant power draw, and to maintain a desired peak output voltage over time. A power converter (PC) provides power from a power source to a charge store, which provides pulse power to the load. A PC controller continuously monitors an output current of the PC and an output voltage of the charge store, and controls the PC to draw constant power from the source, at a level indicated by a power command. A peak voltage controller periodically adjusts the power command, such as to compensate for time-varying effects, based on a peak voltage reference and the output voltage of the charge store measured at times of synchronization pulses. The peak voltage controller generates the synchronization pulses based on rising edges of a pulse current, or receives the synchronization pulses from the radar system controller.

Virtual Capacitor

US Patent:
20190280588, Sep 12, 2019
Filed:
Jan 3, 2019
Appl. No.:
16/238968
Inventors:
- Baltimore MD, US
Deanna K. Temkin - Silver Spring MD, US
International Classification:
H02M 1/32
H02M 7/04
H02M 1/44
Abstract:
An example virtual capacitor including processing circuitry, a physical capacitor, and a bi-directional current source is provided. The bi-directional current source may be electrically coupled between the physical capacitor and a power distribution bus. The control circuitry may be configured to control the bi-directional current source and the physical capacitor to emulate a shunt capacitor electrically connected to the power distribution bus with a different capacitance than a capacitance of the physical capacitor by controlling a voltage across the physical capacitor to be within a physical capacitor voltage range that is different than an operating bus voltage range.

Constant Power Adaptive Power System

US Patent:
20180233925, Aug 16, 2018
Filed:
Dec 13, 2017
Appl. No.:
15/840085
Inventors:
- Baltimore MD, US
Deanna K. Temkin - Silver Spring MD, US
International Classification:
H02J 5/00
H02J 7/34
H02M 3/158
H02M 3/335
H02M 1/44
Abstract:
An adaptive power system for powering a dynamically changing load may include an energy storage device, a bi-directional current source, and compensation circuitry. The bi-directional current source may be electrically connected between the energy storage device and a power distribution bus of a power distribution system. Further, the bi-directional current source is configured to receive a compensation value and, based on the compensation value, maintain a constant power level on the power distribution bus by delivering current to the power distribution bus from the energy storage device or absorbing current from the power distribution bus for storage in the energy storage device. The compensation circuitry may be configured to generate the compensation value. An expected average current value for the dynamically changing load and a power distribution bus current value may be used to generate the compensation value for maintaining the constant power level on the power distribution bus.
