Steam Cooling Control For A Combined Cycle Power Plant

View page
US Patent:
6851265, Feb 8, 2005
Filed:
Feb 18, 2003
Appl. No.:
10/368217
Inventors:
David Elwood - Oviedo FL, US
Brad A. Steinebronn - Oviedo FL, US
Assignee:
Siemens Westinghouse Power Corporation - Orlando FL
International Classification:
F02C006/00
F02C007/16
US Classification:
60772, 60 39182, 122 7 B
Abstract:
A component cooling steam flow control scheme for a combined cycle power plant (). Steam pressure in the steam drum () of a waste heat recovery steam generator () is controlled by selectively positioning a steam bypass valve (). The flow of steam from the steam drum through a cooling steam flow path () is controlled by selectively positioning a steam admission valve () in the cooling steam flow path. At power levels below a predetermined crossover power level (), the cooling steam flow is controlled independently from the steam drum pressure, thus assuring good system controllability at the lower power levels where system control is historically a concern. The steam admission valve is maintained fully open at power levels above the crossover power level, so changes in cooling steam flow at these higher power levels are accomplished by regulating steam drum pressure. System efficiency losses resulting from pressure drop across the steam admission valve are thus minimized at the higher power levels where system efficiency is historically a concern.

Method For Increasing Turndown Capability In An Electric Power Generation System

View page
US Patent:
20100175385, Jul 15, 2010
Filed:
Jan 11, 2010
Appl. No.:
12/685185
Inventors:
Adam D. Plant - Orlando FL, US
Christopher R. Oliveri - Orlando FL, US
Bruce H. Carpenter - Orlando FL, US
Damien G. Teehan - St. Cloud FL, US
David D. Elwood - Oviedo FL, US
International Classification:
F02C 9/18
F02C 6/00
US Classification:
60773, 290 52
Abstract:
A method of operating an electric power generation system (). In one embodiment, a combustion chamber receives a combination of pressurized air () flow output from a compressor () and fuel () for combustion therein. The system () is operated at a relatively high steady state level of power output and then power is turned down by extracting a portion () of the pressurized air () flow before entry into the combustor (). The method may further include throttling of air () flowing through the compressor () with inlet guide vanes (). Features of the reduction in power include maintaining a characteristic combustor () minimum flame temperature with a volumetric percentage of NOor CO emissions not exceeding those corresponding to the relatively high steady state operation.

Feedforward Selective Catalytic Reduction System For Turbine Engines

View page
US Patent:
20120096835, Apr 26, 2012
Filed:
Oct 21, 2010
Appl. No.:
12/908965
Inventors:
Christopher A. Gates - Orlando FL, US
Uygar O. Selman - Oviedo FL, US
Teri J. Robertson - Satellite Beach FL, US
Christopher L. Moering - Oviedo FL, US
David D. Elwood - Oviedo FL, US
International Classification:
F01N 3/00
F01N 9/00
US Classification:
60274, 60285
Abstract:
A system and method of treating an exhaust flow including nitrogen oxides (NOx) in a turbine engine power generation plant is provided. The turbine engine has a selective catalytic reduction system having a catalyst. During steady state operation of the engine, a reducing agent, such as ammonia, is supplied to an injector in an amount based on a measured molar flow of NOx in the exhaust flow. During a disturbance in the operation of the turbine engine, a reducing agent is supplied to the injector in an amount based on a predicted molar flow of NOx in the exhaust flow. In addition, the system can include a biasing feature in which additional reducing agent is supplied to the exhaust flow beyond the predicted molar flow of NOx. The system and method can mitigate NOx during transient engine operation, an operational mode in which emissions are difficult to predict and control.
