US Patent:
7345998, Mar 18, 2008
Filed:
Dec 15, 2004
Appl. No.:
11/012616
Inventors:
Daniel Cregg - Orange CA, US
Marcus Escobosa - Lake Forest CA, US
Ronald Walter - Anaheim CA, US
Donald Bartley - Lake Forest CA, US
Assignee:
Smart Labs, Inc. - Irvine CA
International Classification:
H04J 1/16
H04J 3/24
H04L 12/66
H04L 12/28
US Classification:
370230, 370235, 370356, 370389, 370390, 370392, 370473, 370474
Abstract:
Low-cost intelligent control and communication devices are arranged to communicate with one another over one or more shared physical media, such as a powerline or a radio frequency band. No network controller is needed, because any device can act as a master, slave, or repeater. Adding more devices makes the system more robust, by virtue of a simple protocol for communication retransmissions and retries.

Remote Operation Of Local Or Distant Infrared-Controllable And Non-Infrared-Controllable Devices

View page
US Patent:
20060210278, Sep 21, 2006
Filed:
Mar 21, 2005
Appl. No.:
11/085349
Inventors:
Daniel Cregg - Orange CA, US
Paul Darbee - Coto de Caza CA, US
International Classification:
H04B 10/00
US Classification:
398107000
Abstract:
Tokenized commands originating in an infrared (IR) remote control are sent over a home automation network using low-cost radio-frequency (RF) and/or powerline (PL) communications to enables operation of distant IR-controllable devices not within view of the IR beam from the remote control, as well as operation of other devices that are not IR-controllable. Using IR or RF, the remote control sends only a few bytes of tokenized information designating the specific function to be controlled. An IR or RF receiver optionally retransmits the tokens over another network, such as the powerline. “IR Blaster” devices receive the tokens via RF or another network, and apply them to an IR engine that generates an IR pulse stream identical to that of the original remote control. Non-IR devices receive the tokens via RF or another network and interpret them as specific control commands.

Home Automation Module Having Externally Powered Communications Port

View page
US Patent:
6970072, Nov 29, 2005
Filed:
May 29, 2003
Appl. No.:
10/448680
Inventors:
Daniel Brian Cregg - Orange CA, US
Donald John Bartley - Aliso Viejo CA, US
Ronald Jeffrey Walter - Anaheim CA, US
Derek Robert Henry - Orange CA, US
Assignee:
Smarthome, Inc. - Irvine CA
International Classification:
H04M011/04
US Classification:
34031004, 34031001, 34031008, 340333, 3406932
Abstract:
A home automation module having an externally powered communications port. The module includes an automation microprocessor for controlling the module, a communications port for enabling the module to draw power in limited quantities from an external source, a receiver/transmitter section, a power line carrier (PLC) coupler for enabling the transfer of signals between the module and a main while electrically isolating the module from the main, a zero-crossing detector for monitoring the phase of the power on the main while maintaining substantial electrical isolation of the module from the main, and a boost regulator for enabling the module to derive sufficient power from the communications port to drive the PLC coupler during signal transmissions from the module to the main. The detector maintains substantial electrical isolation through an opto-isolator. The boost regulator stores up power over time so that sufficient power will be available when the demand is made.

System Communication Utilizing Path Between Neighboring Networks

View page
US Patent:
20200084062, Mar 12, 2020
Filed:
Nov 15, 2019
Appl. No.:
16/685378
Inventors:
- Irvine CA, US
Daniel Brian Cregg - Costa Mesa CA, US
International Classification:
H04L 12/28
H04B 3/54
G05B 11/01
H04L 12/64
Abstract:
A method of storing a communication path between neighboring home-control networks is provided. Each home-control network includes a network controller and a plurality of network devices. Each network device is configured to transmit and receive messages using at least one of powerline signaling and radio frequency signaling. A server receives a notification from a first network controller indicating that a first network device within a first home-control network received a message transmitted from a second network device within a second home-control network. The server stores an indication of a communication path from the server to the first network device via the second home-control network in a memory of the server.
