Biopsy Extractor

View page
US Patent:
6416484, Jul 9, 2002
Filed:
Mar 24, 2000
Appl. No.:
09/535343
Inventors:
Michael E. Miller - Trafalgar IN
Dan Ireland - Martinsville IN
Assignee:
Promex, Inc. - Franklin IN
International Classification:
A61B 1000
US Classification:
600564, 606167
Abstract:
Bone marrow biopsy devices, assemblies and methods are provided for extracting bone marrow tissue samples. The assemblies include an outer cannula or biopsy needle and a biopsy extractor sized for insertion into the proximal end of the outer cannula. The biopsy needle includes a tapered portion at the distal end. The extractor includes a cannula and a distal working end. The distal working end has a diameter larger than the diameter of the tapered portion of the biopsy needle lumen. The working end includes a body portion adjacent the cannula and a cutting head having a cutting tip. A hinge is engaged between the body portion and the cutting tip. The hinge allows the cutting head to bend when pushed into the tapered distal end of the outer cannula allowing the cutting tip to sever the tissue sample.

Assignee:
Suros Surgical Systems, Inc. - Indianapolis IN
International Classification:
A61B 1714
US Classification:
606180, 606167, 606 79, 604 22
Abstract:
A surgical cutting instrument includes a hollow hub that has a working portion which terminates at a working end and a connection portion which terminates at a connection end. The connection portion defines a cavity and a lock member which projects from an outer surface of the connection portion A surgical cutting element extends from the working end and is operationally connected to a source of motion. A hollow hub connector has a cylindrical wall with a hand-piece connection portion and a hub engagement portion The hub engagement portion defines a chamber for receiving the connection portion of the hub The chamber has a longitudinal axis A parallel to the length of the hub connector The hub engagement portion further defines a channel through the cylindrical wall for receiving the lock member The channel is in communication with the chamber and has a longitudinal section defined along the length L of the connector. The channel also has a second transverse section communicating with the longitudinal section at a first end and having a second opposite end Further, the channel has a locking recess defined in the wall perpendicularly to the transverse section and in communication with the opposite end of the transverse section The locking recess is sized to receive the lock member A spring element urges the lock member into the locking recess when the locking member is rotated into the opposite end of the transverse section of the channel.

Biopsy Needle With Integrated Guide Pin

US Patent:
6918881, Jul 19, 2005
Filed:
May 31, 2002
Appl. No.:
10/159692
Inventors:
Michael E. Miller - Trafalgar IN, US
Dan C. Ireland - Martinsville IN, US
Assignee:
Promex Technologies, LLC - Franklin IN
International Classification:
A61B005/00
B65D081/00
US Classification:
600567
Abstract:
A biopsy instrument for use in a biopsy gun includes a hollow outer needle defining a lumen therethrough and an inner needle slidably engaged within the lumen. The inner needle defines a cavity adjacent its distal end for receiving a tissue sample. A first hub is attached to the proximal end of the inner needle, and a second hub is attached to the proximal end of the outer needle. An elongated pin having a first end and a second end is fixedly attached to the first hub at the first end of the pin. The second end is in contact with the second hub so that the hub and pin are slideable relative to each other. A stop engagement between the second end of the pin and the second hub is configure to prevent disengagement of the needles and to maintain a specific physical relationship between the hubs.
