US Classification:
382124
Abstract:
A fingerprint sensor package includes a fingerprint sensing integrated circuit within a housing and comprising a plurality of electric field sensing electrodes and processing circuitry connected thereto. At least one external electrode is carried by the housing for finger contact. An electrostatic discharge (ESD) circuit is provided within the housing and is connected to the at least one external electrode. An isolation circuit is connected to the at least one line of the processing circuitry for external connection. The external electrode and ESD circuit, as well as the line isolation circuit protect the integrated circuit against damage by voltage transients, such as ESD. The at least one external electrode may include first and second external electrodes. The first electrode may be connected to the electrostatic discharge circuit. The processing circuit may further comprise a wake-up circuit for selectively powering predetermined circuit portions responsive to sensing finger contact with the second external electrode.

View page
US Patent:
6785408, Aug 31, 2004
Filed:
May 9, 2000
Appl. No.:
09/567644
Inventors:
Dale R. Setlak - Melbourne FL
Barbara E. Cornett - Melbourne Beach FL
Assignee:
Authentic, Inc. - Melbourne FL
International Classification:
G06K 900
US Classification:
382125, 340 583
Abstract:
An apparatus and method for enrolling at least one fingerprint and determining a match of a new fingerprint thereto uses data related to fingerprint ridge flow for matching a desired area segment of a new fingerprint to a corresponding area segment stored in a database. The apparatus generates and stores enrollment data based upon fingerprint ridge flow over a plurality of area segments for the at least one fingerprint, senses a new fingerprint, and generates sensed data based upon fingerprint ridge flow of the new fingerprint over at least one desired area segment of the plurality of area segments. The method also preferably includes comparing the enrollment data and sensed data to determine whether the new fingerprint matches an enrolled fingerprint. The generating of sensed data preferably comprises identifying and generating sensed data for only a single desired area segment in one embodiment. In another embodiment, a plurality of area segments are identified and processed to achieve a desired performance.

US Patent:
6795569, Sep 21, 2004
Filed:
May 9, 2000
Appl. No.:
09/567645
Inventors:
Dale R. Setlak - Melbourne FL
Assignee:
Authentec, Inc. - Melbourne FL
International Classification:
G06K 900
US Classification:
382124, 382125
Abstract:
A method and apparatus generates fingerprint data for a fingerprint area larger than a sensing area of a fingerprint sensor. A fingerprint of a user is enrolled by generating fingerprint data sets responsive to placing a finger of a user on a sensing area of the fingerprint sensor a plurality of times with the finger being slightly repositioned on successive placements. The method also includes processing the fingerprint data sets to generate a composite fingerprint data set over an area of the fingerprint larger than the sensing area of the fingerprint sensor. The method may also be extended to the matching of a new fingerprint to an enrolled fingerprint based upon at least one sensing of the new fingerprint and the composite fingerprint data sets. A plurality of fingerprint feature location data sets may be generated and include at least one of a plurality of minutiae location data sets, a plurality of skin pore location data sets, and a plurality of feature location data sets relating to fingerprint ridge flows.

Fingerprint Sensor Package Including Flexible Circuit Substrate And Associated Methods

View page
US Patent:
6950541, Sep 27, 2005
Filed:
May 9, 2000
Appl. No.:
09/567334
Inventors:
Dale R. Setlak - Melbourne FL, US
Daryl Williams - Palm Bay FL, US
Assignee:
Authentec, Inc. - Melbourne FL
International Classification:
G06K009/00
US Classification:
382126
Abstract:
A fingerprint sensor package preferably includes a fingerprint sensing integrated circuit in a housing, and a circuit substrate comprising first and second portions connected together. The first portion is within the housing and mounts the fingerprint sensing integrated circuit, and the second portion is flexible and extends outwardly from the housing for facilitating electrical connection to the fingerprint sensing integrated circuit from external to the housing. Each portion of the circuit substrate preferably includes at least one insulating layer and at least one electrical conductor thereon. Accordingly, the package can be made relatively compact and electrical interconnections are facilitated by the second portion or extension of the circuit substrate. In one embodiment, the first and second portions are integrally formed together. In this embodiment, the first portion is also flexible.

Fingerprint Sensor Having Enhanced Esd Protection And Associated Methods

US Patent:
7076089, Jul 11, 2006
Filed:
May 17, 2002
Appl. No.:
10/150518
Inventors:
Robert Scott Brandt - Satellite Beach FL, US
David Carl Gebauer - Melbourne FL, US
Dale Raymond Setlak - Melbourne FL, US
Peter Eric Sherlock - Satellite Beach FL, US
Matthew M. Salatino - Satellite Beach FL, US
Assignee:
Authentec, Inc. - Melbourne FL
International Classification:
G06K 9/00
US Classification:
382124, 382312, 438 55, 438112
Abstract:
A fingerprint sensor may include a plurality of electrostatic discharge (ESD) electrodes carried by a dielectric layer of a fingerprint sensing portion. The fingerprint sensing portion is for sensing a fingerprint of a user. The fingerprint sensing portion may include the dielectric layer, and, in some embodiments, may also include an array of sensing electrodes also carried by the dielectric layer. Accordingly, each ESD electrode may be interposed between adjacent sensing electrodes. The ESD electrodes attract ESD events and dissipate the energy therein to avoid damaging adjacent sensing electrodes and/or portions of the dielectric layer. The fingerprint sensor may also include an electrically conductive layer connected to the ESD electrodes, which may provide a convenient ground plane, for example, for removing ESD energy from the fingerprint sensor. The electrically conductive layer may extend beneath the sensing electrodes.
