Apr 30, 2008
Appl. No.:
12/112012
Inventors:
Michael Hibbs - Albuquerque NM, US
Christopher J. Cornelius - Albuquerque NM, US
Cy H. Fujimoto - Albuquerque NM, US
Assignee:
Sandia Corporation - Albuquerque NM
International Classification:
C08J 5/22
C08G 61/02
C08G 61/00
US Classification:
521 27, 528 96, 528397
Abstract:
A poly(phenylene) compound of copolymers that can be prepared with either random or multiblock structures where a first polymer has a repeat unit with a structure of four sequentially connected phenyl rings with a total of 2 pendant phenyl groups and 4 pendant tolyl groups and the second polymer has a repeat unit with a structure of four sequentially connected phenyl rings with a total of 6 pendant phenyl groups. The second polymer has chemical groups attached to some of the pendant phenyl groups selected from CH, CHBr, and CHN(CH)Br groups. When at least one group is CHN(CH)Br, the material functions as an anion exchange membrane.

Inventors:
Cy H. Fujimoto - Albuquerque NM, US
Michael Hibbs - Albuquerque NM, US
Andrea Ambrosini - Albuquerque NM, US
Assignee:
Sandia Corporation - Albuquerque NM
International Classification:
C08F 8/36
C08G 61/10
C08G 61/12
US Classification:
525471, 525534, 525535, 528125, 528128, 528220, 528482, 528487
Abstract:
Improved multi-block sulfonated poly(phenylene) copolymer compositions, methods of making the same, and their use as proton exchange membranes (PEM) in hydrogen fuel cells, direct methanol fuel cells, in electrode casting solutions and electrodes. The multi-block architecture has defined, controllable hydrophobic and hydrophilic segments. These improved membranes have better ion transport (proton conductivity) and water swelling properties.

Poly(Phenylene) With High Ion Selectivity For Use In Anion Exchange Membranes

View page
US Patent:
20210087387, Mar 25, 2021
Filed:
Sep 23, 2019
Appl. No.:
16/578629
Inventors:
- Albuquerque NM, US
Cy Fujimoto - Albuquerque NM, US
International Classification:
C08L 65/02
C08G 61/10
B01J 41/09
Abstract:
A method for synthesizing a poly(phenylene) with high ion selectivity comprises dissolving an alkyl halide poly(phenylene) in a polar aprotic solvent to form a nonaqueous solution and adding an anhydrous nucleophile to the nonaqueous solution to replace the halide of the alkyl halide poly(phenylene) with a cationic group of the nucleophile. The poly(phenylene) can be used in anion exchange membranes.
