Plenum Assembly Which Filters Multiple Fluidic Current Channels Using A Single Recirculation Filter

View page
US Patent:
6898048, May 24, 2005
Filed:
Nov 1, 2002
Appl. No.:
10/286116
Inventors:
Carl F. Adams - Yukon OK, US
Jackson W. Nichols - Edmond OK, US
Cory B. Welscher - Yukon OK, US
Assignee:
Seagate Technology LLC - Scotts Valley CA
International Classification:
G11B033/14
US Classification:
360 9702
Abstract:
A plenum assembly for use in a data storage device to direct and filter recirculating currents established by high speed rotation of a recording disc. The plenum assembly includes a top plate and a partitioning wall which projects from the top plate to form opposing, longitudinally extending first and second chambers. A first portion of the recirculating currents is directed along the first chamber and a separate, second portion of the recirculating currents is directed along the second chamber. A recirculation filter transversely extends across the first and second chambers and intersects the partitioning wall so that the respective first and second portions of the recirculating currents concurrently pass through adjacent sides of the recirculation filter before exiting the plenum assembly and merging into a combined set of recirculating currents.

Two-Part Flow Conditioning Apparatus For A Disc Drive

US Patent:
6987640, Jan 17, 2006
Filed:
Aug 27, 2002
Appl. No.:
10/228425
Inventors:
Alan Hing-Bun Tsang - Minneapolis MN, US
James Eiji Kaneko - Oakdale MN, US
Srinivas Tadepalli - Eden Prairie MN, US
Cory Bert Welscher - Belle Plaine MN, US
Narintr Narisaranukul - Bloomington MN, US
Blaine Thomas Peterson - Bloomington MN, US
Carl Fred Adams - Yukon OK, US
Assignee:
Seagate Technology LLC - Scotts Valley CA
International Classification:
G11B 33/14
G11B 25/04
G11B 21/22
US Classification:
360 9702, 360 9703, 3602547
Abstract:
A disc drive includes a base, at least one disc rotatably attached to the base, and an actuator assembly rotatably attached to base and supporting a slider and a transducer at a distal end thereof. The slider and transducer are positioned to be in transducing relation with respect to the disc. An air dam is positioned over the disc and near an arc through which the slider and transducer are rotated. The air dam is positioned so as to produce an area of high pressure substantially about an area including a portion of the arc through which the slider and transducer are rotated. Surfaces are aligned with and extend in a coplanar relationship with the disc to transfer an outwardly directed airflow away from the disc without impinging turbulent flow on or at the disc edge.

Downstream Finned Stripper Shroud Airstream Conditioning Apparatus For A Disc Drive

View page
US Patent:
7054103, May 30, 2006
Filed:
Jun 27, 2001
Appl. No.:
09/894668
Inventors:
Srinivas Tadepalli - Eden Prairie MN, US
Cory Burt Welscher - Yukon OK, US
Assignee:
Seagate Technology LLC - Scotts Valley CA
International Classification:
G11B 33/14
G11B 25/04
US Classification:
360 9702, 360 9703
Abstract:
An airstream conditioning apparatus for a data storage device employing a spinning data storage disc and an actuator operatively interfacing in a data reading and writing relationship. The apparatus comprises an airstream stripper downstream of the actuator with respect to the direction of air currents generated by the spinning discs. The airstream stripper comprises a vane extending substantially radially from an outer radial portion to an inner radial portion of the data storage disc and adjacent the data storage surface. The vane is disposed substantially transverse to the actuator distal end along the radial path of actuator travel across the data disc.

Fluidic Stripper Assembly With Load/Unload Ramp

View page
US Patent:
7633719, Dec 15, 2009
Filed:
Dec 21, 2007
Appl. No.:
11/963569
Inventors:
Matthew Glenn Duvall - Oklahoma City OK, US
Cory Bert Welscher - Belle Plaine MN, US
Kenneth Lee Pottebaum - Lakeville MN, US
Jackson Wagner Nichols - Belle Plaine MN, US
Assignee:
Seagate Technology LLC - Scotts Valley CA
International Classification:
G11B 17/02
G11B 33/14
US Classification:
3602547, 3602548, 360 9702
Abstract:
An apparatus which provides improved positional control for an access element moveable adjacent a rotatable surface, such as a data transducing head adjacent a data recording disc in a data storage device. The apparatus comprises a fluidic stripper with one or more cantilevered arms which project proximate a corresponding array of one or more rotatable surfaces. Each arm comprises an edge surface which extends proximate to and in facing relationship with a movement path of an access element across the associated rotatable surface to impede fluidic currents established by rotation of the rotatable surface. Each arm further supports a ramp structure which receivingly supports the access element at a position away from the rotatable surface and proximate the innermost diameter during a deactivated mode when the rotatable surface is stationary.

Limit Stop Filter Support Apparatus

View page
US Patent:
7262934, Aug 28, 2007
Filed:
Jun 7, 2004
Appl. No.:
10/862673
Inventors:
Carl Fred Adams - Lakeville MN, US
Steve Scott Eckerd - Savage MN, US
Cory Bert Welscher - Belle Plaine MN, US
Alan Hing-Bun Tsang - Minneapolis MN, US
Jackson Wagner Nichols - Belle Plaine MN, US
Assignee:
Seagate Technology LLC - Scotts Valley CA
International Classification:
G11B 17/02
US Classification:
360 9702
Abstract:
A limit stop filter support apparatus for use in controlling fluidic currents and limiting movement of an actuator within a housing, such as in a data storage device. First and second filter retention members extend from a filter support base to confine opposing ends of a filter used to filter fluidic currents within the housing, and a cantilevered limit stop extends from the base to contactingly limit movement of an actuator moveable within the housing. The limit stop preferably comprises a spring member supporting a latch member, the latch member selectively confining the actuator in a parked position. The first and second retention members each preferably include a shroud surface adjacent an outer peripheral edge of a rotatable storage medium to direct the fluidic currents established by rotation of the medium.
