System And Method For Subsurface Characterization Including Uncertainty Estimation

View page
US Patent:
20130046476, Feb 21, 2013
Filed:
Aug 15, 2011
Appl. No.:
13/210269
Inventors:
Philip Stephan Schultz - Bellaire TX, US
Cory James Hoelting - Houston TX, US
Assignee:
Chevron U.S.A. Inc. - San Ramon CA
International Classification:
G06F 19/00
G01V 1/28
US Classification:
702 18
Abstract:
A system and method for subsurface characterization including depth and structural uncertainty estimation is disclosed. In one embodiment, the method may include determining a detectability threshold for moveout in a seismic data gather based on the seismic data and computing a depth uncertainty function, wherein the depth uncertainty function represents an error estimate that is used to analyze an interpretation of the seismic data. In another embodiment, the method may include receiving a depth uncertainty volume and at least one interpreted horizon from seismic data, extracting a depth uncertainty cage for each of the interpreted horizons based on the depth uncertainty volume, and simulating multiple realizations for each of the interpreted horizons, constrained by the depth uncertainty cage. The multiple realizations may be used for analyzing changes to geometrical or structural properties of the at least one interpreted horizon. The changes may be plotted as at least one distribution and may be used to make P10, P50 and P90 estimates.

System And Method For Characterization With Non-Unique Solutions Of Anisotropic Velocities

US Patent:
20120099396, Apr 26, 2012
Filed:
Oct 22, 2010
Appl. No.:
12/910042
Inventors:
Cory J. Hoelting - Houston TX, US
Jennifer L. Lewis - Houston TX, US
James M. Davenport - Houston TX, US
International Classification:
G01V 1/28
US Classification:
367 73
Abstract:
A system and method for characterizing structural uncertainty in a seismic analysis of features in a subsurface region includes obtaining seismic data including information representative of the features, performing a plurality of depth migrations on the seismic data, each depth migration being based on a model using a respective set of parameters relating to a velocity field and anisotropy of the subsurface region, selecting a family of equivalent solutions from the plurality of depth migrations, evaluating a characteristic of at least a portion of the subsurface region for each member of the family of equivalent solutions, determining a range of values of the evaluated parameters, and based on the determined range, determining a degree of uncertainty of the seismic analysis.

Systems And Methods For Generating Depth Uncertainty Values As A Function Of Position In A Subsurface Volume Of Interest

View page
US Patent:
20230042577, Feb 9, 2023
Filed:
Aug 5, 2021
Appl. No.:
17/394808
Inventors:
- San Ramon CA, US
Chaoshun Hu - Houston TX, US
Paige Rene Given - Houston TX, US
Gilles Hennenfent - Covington LA, US
Cory Hoelting - Houston TX, US
International Classification:
E21B 47/04
G01V 1/34
G06N 20/00
Abstract:
Systems and methods for estimating reservoir productivity as a function of position in a subsurface volume of interest are disclosed. Exemplary implementations may: obtain an initial depth uncertainty model; obtain training depth uncertainty parameter values from the non-transient storage medium; obtain corresponding training depth uncertainty values; generate a trained depth uncertainty model by training the initial depth uncertainty model using the training depth uncertainty parameter values and the corresponding training depth uncertainty values; and store the trained depth uncertainty model.

Method Of Correcting Velocity For Complex Surface Topography

View page
US Patent:
20150177401, Jun 25, 2015
Filed:
Dec 19, 2013
Appl. No.:
14/134258
Inventors:
Maisha Lara Amaru - Houston TX, US
Cory James Hoelting - Houston TX, US
Assignee:
Chevron U.S.A. Inc. - San Ramon CA
International Classification:
G01V 1/36
G01V 1/30
G01V 1/28
Abstract:
Embodiments of a method for correcting velocity models for complex topographies are disclosed herein. In general, embodiments of the method utilize velocity corrections based on geomechanical effects to correct a velocity model to take into account complex surface topographies. In particular, embodiments of the method use a nucleus strain theory to determine the velocity corrections. Further details and advantages of various embodiments of the method are described in more detail herein.
