US Patent:
8627908, Jan 14, 2014
Filed:
Jan 29, 2011
Appl. No.:
13/016969
Inventors:
Carl W. Wellborn - Detroit MI, US
Mary Ellen Decaluwe - Oxford MI, US
Jim K. Rainbolt - Haslett MI, US
Roger A. Clark - Waterford MI, US
Assignee:
GM Global Technology Operations LLC - Detroit MI
International Classification:
B62D 53/04
US Classification:
180 142, 701 96
Abstract:
A semi-autonomous vehicle couplable to a parent vehicle is described, and includes a chassis supported on first and second axles coupled to a plurality of wheels, a propulsion system configured to transfer torque to one of the wheels, a steering system configured to control direction of travel of the semi-autonomous vehicle, a braking system configured to apply braking force to the wheels, a high-voltage electrical energy storage system, an extra-vehicle communications system, and an extra-vehicle sensory system. A control system operatively couples to the propulsion system, the steering system, and the braking system. A coupling device is configured to electrically couple the semi-autonomous vehicle to the parent vehicle, the coupling device consisting essentially of a high-voltage DC electrical power bus electrically coupled to the high-voltage electrical energy storage system.

Variable Door Check System For A Vehicle

View page
US Patent:
20130074412, Mar 28, 2013
Filed:
May 24, 2012
Appl. No.:
13/479712
Inventors:
Carl W. Wellborn - Detroit MI, US
Timothy Saunders - Warren MI, US
Erik Rasmussen - Garden City MI, US
Mary Ellen DeCaluwe - Oxford MI, US
Thomas E. Houck - Bloomfield Hills MI, US
Assignee:
GM GLOBAL TECHNOLOGY OPERATIONS LLC - Detroit MI
International Classification:
E05F 5/02
B60J 5/06
US Classification:
49381, 16 85
Abstract:
A door check system includes a rod interconnecting a door assembly and a body of a vehicle. The door check system secures the position of the door at any location along a swing path of the door, between a fully open position and a fully closed position. The door check system includes a rod interconnecting the door assembly and the body. A coil spring is disposed about the rod, with the rod extending through a central aperture thereof. An actuator is coupled to the coil spring and configured for tightening and loosening the coil spring about the rod. When the actuator tightens the spring about the rod, the spring grasps the rod and secures the position of the door assembly relative to the body. When the actuator loosens the spring from about the rod, the door assembly is free to move along the swing path.

Adaptable Pick Up Truck Configuration

View page
US Patent:
59347279, Aug 10, 1999
Filed:
Jul 16, 1997
Appl. No.:
8/895109
Inventors:
Robert Gordon Storc - Rochester Hills MI
Leon F. Van Eden - Troy MI
Carl Wellborn - Detroit MI
Assignee:
General Motors Corporation - Detroit MI
International Classification:
B62D 2500
US Classification:
296 2611
Abstract:
A pick up truck configuration is adaptable for carrying a cargo load longer than the cargo box and preferably at or above the wheel covers protruding into the cargo box. An adaptable pick up truck configuration includes a cab portion and a cargo box. A box panel portion is pivotally connected to a front wall of the cargo box and is movable to a generally horizontal position in which the box panel portion partially overlies and is supported by the wheel covers. The cargo box includes a cargo box opening when the box panel portion is in the generally horizontal position. A cab panel portion is pivotally mounted to the cab portion and is movable between a generally vertical closed condition and a generally horizontal open position. The cab portion has a cab opening when the cab panel portion is in the generally horizontal position and the cab opening is at least partially aligned with the cargo box opening. Thus, the pick up truck configuration is adaptable to carry the cargo load longer than the cargo box through both the cab portion and the cargo box and also advantageously can carry a wider load above the wheel covers.

G01C 21/36
Abstract:
A guidance system for a user includes a first haptic device disposed on a first, rightward side and a second haptic device disposed on a second, leftward side of the user. A local controller is disposed on the user to communicate with the first and second haptic devices. A remote server is configured to communicate with the local controller. A vehicle includes a global positioning system sensor, and is in communication with the remote server. The local controller includes a control routine that is executable to determine a desired location of the vehicle, and determine a present location of the user. The control routine guides, via the first and second haptic devices, movement of the user towards the desired location of the vehicle, and indicates, via the first and second haptic devices, arrival of the vehicle at the desired location. The control routine pairs the user with the vehicle.
