Abstract:
The disclosed technology relates to a lubricating oil composition comprising at least one base oil and at least one overbased low molecular weight zinc dialkyldithiophosphate derived from one or more dithiophosphoric acids represented by the formula (I) and/or a metal salt thereof, wherein in formula (I), Rand Rare independently hydrocarbyl groups, the average total number of carbon atoms in Rand Rin formula (I) being in the range from 4 to 10, the metal ratio of the overbased low molecular weight zinc dialkyldithiophosphate being at least about 1.15:1, the lubricating oil composition being characterized by a phosphorus concentration of up to about 0.12% by weight. The disclosed technology also relates to a method of lubricating an internal combustion engine and improving the efficiency of the emissions control system of the engine.

Abstract:
Molybdenum-containing compositions prepared by reacting an olefinically unsaturated compound capable of reacting with active sulfur with a composition prepared by reacting: (a) a phosphorus-containing acid represented by the formula: ##STR1## wherein each X and X' is independently oxygen or sulfur, each n is zero or one and each R is independently the same or a different hydrocarbon-based radical; and (b) at least one hexavalent molybdenum oxide compound, and (c) hydrogen sulfide, in the presence of (d) a polar solvent are useful as additives for lubricants. Novel compounds of the general formula ##STR1## wherein each R. sub. 1 is independently a tertiary alkyl group containing from 4 to about 8 carbon atoms and each of X, Y and Z is independently hydrogen or a hydrocarbon-based group, provided at least one of X, Y and Z is an aliphatic hydrocarbon group containing at least 7 carbon atoms, and wherein R. sub. 1 is different from the at least one of X, Y and Z that is an aliphatic hydrocarbon group containing at least 7 carbon atoms, R. sub. 2 is an alkylene or alkylidene group, and n is a number ranging from zero to about 4.
