Filed:
Jun 28, 2000
Appl. No.:
09/604991
Inventors:
Burnell L. Bender - Woodburn IN
Assignee:
International Truck Intellectual Property Company, L.L.C. - Warrenville IL
International Classification:
B60Q 102
US Classification:
315 82, 315 77, 307 108
Abstract:
An anti-glare system for motor vehicle headlights is effective to illuminate the headlights at reduced intensity when the vehicle is not in motion and the headlight switch is on thereby promoting better visibility for the driver of an oncoming vehicle. This system is believed particularly useful in service vehicles, such as pick-up and delivery trucks and school buses.

Air Assisted Vehicle Clutch Linkage

View page
US Patent:
6719116, Apr 13, 2004
Filed:
Jul 24, 2002
Appl. No.:
10/202364
Inventors:
Burnell L. Bender - Woodburn IN
Brian P. Marshall - Fort Wayne IN
Assignee:
International Truck Intellectual Property Company, LLC - Warrenville IL
International Classification:
F16D 2508
US Classification:
192 85C, 192 91 R, 192 99 S
Abstract:
Clutching arrangements for motor vehicle standard transmissions. The force required to clutch a vehicle transmission using a foot pedal is reduced by providing a compressed air actuated boost device attached to the clutch linkage. The degree of boost is selectable using a hand controlled air pressure regulator. Activation of the boost device is controlled by switches which are sensitive to clutch pedal position.

Lift Axle Control

View page
US Patent:
6810982, Nov 2, 2004
Filed:
Feb 12, 2002
Appl. No.:
10/074203
Inventors:
Dale L. Kuhn - Fort Wayne IN
Michael E. Stagg - Evansville IN
Burnell L. Bender - Woodburn IN
Steven W. Fuller - Leo IN
Anthony D. Sutton - Fort Wayne IN
Brandi L. Grimm - Fort Wayne IN
Joseph M. Smith - Bluffton IN
Assignee:
International Truck Intellectual Property Company, LLC - Warrenville IL
International Classification:
B62D 6112
US Classification:
180209, 280 865
Abstract:
A control for raising and lowering a lift axle ( ) on a motor vehicle ( ) having an ignition switch ( ) for turning the motor on and off. The control has a circuit ( ) that is fed through the ignition switch when the ignition switch is on but not when the ignition switch is off and that has a first switch device ( F) that requires actuation to enable the lift axle to be lowered and a second switch device ( D) that, once the first switch device has been actuated to enable the lift axle to be lowered, is effective upon being actuated to cause the lift axle to be lowered. Placement of the vehicle transmission in reverse automatically raises the lift axle if it has been lowered.

Motor Vehicle Battery Disconnect Switch Circuits

View page
US Patent:
6836094, Dec 28, 2004
Filed:
Jul 1, 2003
Appl. No.:
10/611005
Inventors:
Burnell L. Bender - Woodburn IN
Assignee:
International Truck Intellectual Property Company, LLC - Warrenville IL
International Classification:
H02J 700
US Classification:
320104
Abstract:
A disconnect switch ( SA) is placed in circuit between a battery bank ( ) and a distribution point ( B) for the entire electrical system load except the engine cranking motor ( ). This allows the circuit between the battery bank and a cranking motor solenoid ( ) that operates the cranking motor to be switch-free. A switch-free circuit allows a continuous cable to connect the battery bank to the cranking motor solenoid, significantly reducing the electrical resistance between the battery bank and the cranking motor solenoid.

Lift Gate Power Control System

View page
US Patent:
7429804, Sep 30, 2008
Filed:
Sep 24, 2004
Appl. No.:
10/950007
Inventors:
Nicholas D. Lengacher - Fort Wayne IN, US
Burnell L. Bender - Woodburn IN, US
Assignee:
International Truck Intellectual Property Company, LLC - Warrenville IL
International Classification:
B60L 1/00
US Classification:
307 91
Abstract:
A lift gate () is raised and lowered on a motor vehicle by a prime mover. An electrical system of the vehicle has at least one D. C. storage battery () for raising and lowering the lift gate when the vehicle engine is not running. A disconnect, such as a mag switch () carries electricity from the battery to the prime mover when actuated to an enabling condition. Control logic for selectively enabling and unenabling the disconnect to carry electricity to the prime mover from the battery includes a control input (), a source providing battery voltage data corresponding to actual battery voltage (), and a timer in an ESC (). The control logic causes the disconnect to become and remain enabled upon the control input requesting enablement of the disconnect and battery voltage data indicating actual battery voltage in compliance with a defined criterion until the earlier occurrence of 1) elapse of a length of time set by the timer and 2) battery voltage data disclosing non-compliance with the defined criterion.

Glare Reducing Enhancements For Vehicle Exterior Lighting Systems

View page
US Patent:
7537365, May 26, 2009
Filed:
May 10, 2006
Appl. No.:
11/382566
Inventors:
Burnell L. Bender - Woodburn IN, US
Allen R. Wittman - Convoy OH, US
Jason E. McVay - Fort Wayne IN, US
Joseph R. Turner - Huntertown IN, US
Assignee:
International Truck Intellectual Property Company, LLC - Warrenville IL
International Classification:
F21S 8/10
US Classification:
362512, 362539, 362507
Abstract:
An exterior lighting system of a motor vehicle () has headlamps () and foglamps () for illuminating a field of view. The headlamps have lenses () through which light passes to illuminate the field of view and are constructed to alter the light that is directed within the headlamps toward upper zones (A) of the lenses relative to light that is directed toward lower zones (B) of the lenses when both headlamps and foglamps are shining onto the field of view so as to attenuate headlight glare that would otherwise be seen by a driver of the vehicle looking toward the field of view in the absence of the light alteration. Various embodiments of inventive headlamps are shown.

Multiple Geofence System For Vehicles

View page
US Patent:
20090140886, Jun 4, 2009
Filed:
Dec 3, 2007
Appl. No.:
11/949079
Inventors:
Burnell L. Bender - Woodburn IN, US
Assignee:
International Truck Intellectual Property Company, LLC - Warrenville IL
International Classification:
G08G 1/123
US Classification:
340988
Abstract:
At least first and second geofences are established. The first geofence provides for indicating to an operator of a vehicle a limit to the territorial extent of a permitted operational area for the vehicle. The second geofence limits the territorial extent of a permitted operational area for the mobile platform, typically by limiting the mobility of the mobile platform. The first and second geofences are located with respect to one another and the permitted operational area so that with movement through the limits of the permitted operational area, the mobile platform encounters the first geofence no later than it encounters the second geofence.
