In one embodiment, a network session is established for transmitting a media stream. The media stream is encoded into a first set of media stream packets and the first set of media stream packets transmitted according to the established network session. The media stream is also encoded into a second set of retransmission-based repair packets and used as a second redundant copy of the media stream. The second set of retransmission packets are transmitted regardless of receiving any indication of lost or dropped packets during the network session.

A switching architecture for very high data rates which is placed between a port connecting to a fiber optic gigabit ethernet link and a two Gbit/sec backplane of a concentrator. A port connects to the link for both receiving and transmitting data packets from and to the link. A first FTE receives a data packet from the port, and analyzes the data packet to determine if the data packet should be forwarded to the backplane of the concentrator. If the data packet is to be forwarded, the first FTE sends the data packet to a backplane connection for connecting to the backplane of the network concentrator. A second FTE is connected to the backplane connection. The second FTE receives a data packet from the backplane connection, and analyzes the data packet in a manner similar to the first FTE to determine if a packet should be forwarded to the port. The process of the second FTE with regard to the data packets is substantially similar to the process of the first FTE, except that it is determined whether or not the data packets from the backplane should be forwarded to the port. This switch architecture therefore uses separate transmit and receive channels with independent forwarding tables.

A parallel asynchronous elasticity buffer. Selection of the address of a storage element for writing or reading of data is provided by asynchronous input and output pointers implemented using circular gray code counters. The buffer is initialized once during transmission of each frame of data so that the pointers do not select the same storage element for writing and reading at the same time. Write overflow or read underrun of a storage element is detected before any data corruption can occur by comparing the input and output pointers. An error condition is detected if the input and output pointers overlap for a threshold period, which can be shorter than the period required for writing or reading of a multibit data unit to or from the buffer. The overlap time period is determined by comparing the pointers at one or more sampling times corresponding to selected phases of a clock signal.

A wireless sensor preferably has a case which is intrinsically safe and has no exposed parts which can become not intrinsically safe due to the passage of time or through contact with chemicals typically encountered in a location where the wireless sensor is used. It preferably has no integral visual display other than lights, and it preferably includes at least one signal light. The sensor preferably includes a wireless transceiver for allowing remote read and remote control of the sensor. The sensor preferably includes piezoelectric pressure detectors for allowing a user to locally interact with the sensor by pressing on the case. Data can be automatically harvested from the sensors by a portable electronic data-retrieving device which is usually geographically remote from the sensors when the portable electronic data-retrieving device and the sensors are in range of a wireless system which allows them to communicate when they are geographically proximate each other.

A method for automatically collecting and analyzing data from a plurality of industrial equipment includes automatically establishing communication between sensor nodes of the plurality of equipment and a walk-in device in response to the walk-in device entering a data collection area in a facility associated with the plurality of electrical equipment. The method also includes determining if the walk-in device is an authorized device to collect data from the plurality of industrial equipment and, in response to determining the walk-in device is an authorized device, automatically collecting select data from the plurality of industrial equipment on the walk-in device. The collected data is processed and one or more actions are performed based on the collected data.
