Abstract:
Methods for treating a substrate are disclosed. A method includes contacting a substrate with a pretreatment composition comprising a Group IVB metal and an electropositive metal and passing an electric current between an anode and the substrate serving as a cathode to deposit a coating from the pretreatment composition on the substrate. A method for treating an electrically conductive substrate also includes contacting the electrically conductive substrate with a pretreatment composition comprising a Group IVB metal and an electropositive metal and electrodepositing a coating on the electrically conductive substrate from the pretreatment composition. A method further includes contacting an electrically conductive substrate with a pretreatment composition comprising a Group IVB metal and an electropositive metal; and electrodepositing a coating on the electrically conductive substrate from the pretreatment composition, wherein the coating comprises each of the Group IVB metal and the electropositive metal.

Abstract:
The present invention relates to a substrate having (a) a first material applied to at least a portion of the substrate, and (b) a coating layer deposited from a liquid coating composition including a film-forming resin, and optionally a crosslinker that is reactive with the film-forming resin, in direct contact with at least a portion of the substrate to which the first material has been applied. The first material is (i) a catalyst that catalyzes cure of the liquid coating composition, (ii) a component reactive with the film-forming resin and/or the crosslinker of the liquid coating composition, and/or (iii) a rheology modifier.

Abstract:
The present invention is directed to a method for preparing a coated optical article including providing a non-conductive substrate; forming a conductive coating layer over the substrate; electrodepositing a first electrodepositable coating composition over the conductive coating layer to form a first electrodeposited inorganic coating layer; and electrodepositing a second electrodepositable coating composition over the first electrodeposited coating layer to form a second electrodeposited inorganic coating layer thereover, thereby forming a multi-layer antireflective inorganic coating over the conductive coating layer. Each of the first electrodepositable coating composition and the second electrodepositable coating composition is different one from the other, and each includes a sol prepared from a composition of a metal oxide precursor and protic acid such that each coating composition is hydrolyzed. Abstract:
Disclosed is a method of treating a substrate. The surface is contacted with a sealing composition comprising a lithium cation; and optionally, with conversion composition comprising a cation of a lanthanide, a Group IIIB, and/or a Group IVB metal. The conversion composition is applied to provide a film on the substrate surface resulting in a level of the lanthanide, Group IIIB metal, and/or Group IV metal thereon of at least 100 counts greater than on a surface of a substrate that does not have the film thereon as measured by X-ray fluorescence (measured using X-Met 7500, Oxford Instruments; operating parameters 60 second timed assay, 15 Kv, 45 μA, filter 3, T(p)=1.5 μs for lanthanides, Group IIIB metals, and Group IVB metals except zirconium; operating parameters 60 second timed assay, 40 Kv, 10 μA, filter 4, T(p)=1.5 μs for zirconium). A substrate obtainable by the methods also is disclosed.
