In a method and system for wagering on sporting events, multiple point-of-purchase terminals are provided for generating tickets, with each ticket including a series of player-selected numbers (or other alphanumeric characters or symbols) or a series of randomly generated numbers (or other alphanumeric characters or symbols), each number corresponding to a selected outcome associated with the one or more sporting events. A first predetermined portion of the purchase price is allocated to a wager on the selected outcomes, which is placed with a sportsbook. Another portion of the purchase price is allocated to a secondary payout pool. Occurrence of the one or more sporting events results in a series of winning outcomes and a payout. The secondary payout pool can then be accessed to award consolation prizes and/or supplement payouts.

Abstract:
In a method and system for administering a lottery in combination with a pari-mutuel pool, a ticket is generated at a point-of-purchase terminal that includes a series of numbers. A first portion of the purchase price of the ticket is allocated to the pari-mutuel pool for an event, and a wager is entered in the amount of the first portion of the purchase price in a pari-mutuel pool for the event. A second portion of the purchase price is allocated to a progressive pool. After occurrence of the event, a determination is made as to whether the series of numbers on the ticket matches a winning series of numbers determined by the event, and if so, a payout is made from the pari-mutuel pool. Furthermore, after occurrence of the event, a determination is made as to whether the player qualifies for a progressive payout from the progressive pool.

In a method for administering a lottery in combination with a pari-mutuel pool, tickets are generated at point-of-purchase terminals, each ticket including a series of randomly generated or user-selected numbers. A portion of the purchase price of each ticket is allocated to the pari-mutuel pool and is treated as a wager in the pari-mutuel pool, while another portion of the purchase price may be allocated to other pools, including a supplemental payout pool. If the ticket is a winning ticket, a preliminary amount of a payout from the wager in the pari-mutuel pool is determined. In some cases, this preliminary amount is supplemented from monies in the supplemental payout pool.
