Method And System For Simultaneously Broadcasting And Receiving Digital And Analog Signals

View page
US Patent:
6563880, May 13, 2003
Filed:
Apr 22, 1999
Appl. No.:
09/298093
Inventors:
Bill J. Hunsinger - Urbana IL
Derek D. Kumar - Champaigne IL
Assignee:
Ibiquity Digital Corporation - Columbia MD
International Classification:
H04H 500
US Classification:
375260, 375271, 375302, 375324, 375340, 455102
Abstract:
A system and method for transmitting digital information through a medium such as atmospheric free-space includes a transmitter which generates a signal based on a basis set of mutually orthogonal, spectrally-shaped, sequences of substantially equal length and having predetermined autocorrelation values. The sequences may resemble noise in at least some of their characteristics. The orthogonality or cross-correlation characteristics, the autocorrelation characteristics and the resemblance to noise are due to features derived from sequences of pseudo-random numbers which themselves resemble noise in at least some of their characteristics. The waveform set based on the sequences is modulated digitally. The modulated set may be summed together along with a wideband reference signal of reduced amplitude and optionally an FM analog signal to form a composite signal which is broadcast typically through free space to at least one receiver. The receiver separates the analog FM signal from the digital signal and thereafter demodulates the digital data-carrying waveforms and outputs a stream of digital data.

Surface Acoustic Wave Resonator

US Patent:
41624661, Jul 24, 1979
Filed:
Sep 28, 1977
Appl. No.:
5/837569
Inventors:
Bill J. Hunsinger - Mahomet IL
Roger D. Fildes - Urbana IL
Assignee:
University of Illinois Foundation - Urbana IL
International Classification:
H03H 902
H03H 926
H03H 932
H03H 904
US Classification:
333194
Abstract:
Applicants have discovered that the performance of Surface Acoustic Wave Resonators can be markedly improved by digressing from the accepted techniques of sensing standing waves set up by resonation in the SAW device. Applicants have developed a SAW resonator which employs one or more unidirectional transducers which are sensitive to traveling rather than standing waves. This construction obviates the deletevious action of direct, broad band, input to output coupling and avoids the high position sensitivity which occurs when bidirectional transducers are utilized to sense standing wave patterns.

Bill J. Hunsinger - Mahomet IL
Assignee:
University of Illinois Foundation - Urbana IL
International Classification:
H01L 4104
H03H 930
US Classification:
310 98
Abstract:
A transducer for a surface acoustic wave device. In accordance with an embodiment of the invention, there is provided an acoustic wave propagating substrate and first and second spaced elongated conductive fingers disposed on the substrate. A layer of dielectric material is formed over the first and second fingers. A first electrode is formed on the dielectric layer above the first finger, the first electrode being proportioned to oppose a predetermined portion of the first finger. A second electrode is formed on the dielectric layer above the first finger, the second electrode being spaced from the first electrode and proportioned to oppose another predetermined portion of the first finger. A third electrode is formed on the dielectric layer above the second finger, the third electrode being proportioned to oppose a predetermined portion of the second finger. A fourth electrode is formed on the dielectric layer above the second finger, the fourth electrode being proportioned to oppose another predetermined portion of the second finger.

Inventors:
Bill J. Hunsinger - Urbana IL
Derek D. Kumar - Champaigne IL
Assignee:
USA Digital Radio Partners LP - Columbia MD
International Classification:
H04B 726
US Classification:
455 65
Abstract:
Apparatus and method for transmitting a digitized wideband signal robust to multipath degradation and intersymbol interference within a predetermined broadcast band. A basis set of wideband mutually orthogonal pseudorandom basis signal waveforms of substantially equal length and having predetermined autocorrelation values and a predetermined spectral shape are generated. The length of the waveforms in the set represents a baud. The wideband waveforms of the basis set are data modulated so as to define digital data. The basis set substantially maintains the predetermined spectral shape during the modulation.

Surface Acoustic Wave Device Having Improved Multi-Strip Coupler

US Patent:
44172214, Nov 22, 1983
Filed:
Apr 2, 1982
Appl. No.:
6/364924
Inventors:
Bill J. Hunsinger - Mahomet IL
Assignee:
Harris Corporation - Melbourne FL
International Classification:
H03H 942
H03H 964
H03H 9145
US Classification:
333194
Abstract:
A surface acoustic wave (SAW) device is disclosed. The SAW device includes input and output transducers disposed in spaced acoustic tracks on a piezoelectric substrate material, and a multi-strip coupler for translating the acoustic beam generated by the input transducer into the acoustic track in which the output transducer is located. The multi-strip coupler is designed so as to minimize the influence of Fresnel peaks found to exist in the amplitude profile of the acoustic beam in the output acoustic track. The multi-strip coupler is longer than in the past, and includes a central fanned region for providing well defined acoustic boundaries whose locations do not vary from device to device.
