International Classification:
G06F 12/00
G06F 17/30
US Classification:
707831, 707822
Abstract:
A file system shell is provided. One aspect of the shell provides virtual folders which expose regular files and folders to users in different views based on their metadata instead of the actual physical underlying file system structure on the disk. Users are able to work with the virtual folders through direct manipulation (e. g. , clicking and dragging, copying, pasting, etc. ). Filters are provided for narrowing down sets of items. Quick links are provided which can be clicked on to generate useful views of the sets of items. Libraries are provided which consist of large groups of usable types of items that can be associated together, along with functions and tools related to the items. A virtual address bar is provided which comprises a plurality of segments, each segment corresponding to a filter for selecting content. A shell browser is provided with which users can readily identify an item based on the metadata associated with that item. An object previewer in a shell browser is provided which is configured to display a plurality of items representing multiple item types.

US Patent:
7984057, Jul 19, 2011
Filed:
May 10, 2005
Appl. No.:
11/125328
Inventors:
Benjamin A Betz - Redmond WA, US
David G. De Vorchik - Seattle WA, US
Lyon F. K. Wong - Issaquah WA, US
Timothy P McKee - Seattle WA, US
Assignee:
Microsoft Corporation - Redmond WA
International Classification:
G06F 7/00
US Classification:
707759, 707773, 707774, 707775
Abstract:
The present invention provides a computer method and system for querying or searching for at least one data file corresponding to a query definition. A first query is received which may provide a query definition that may be used as a scope of search for a second query. Modifications of the scope of search based on modification of the first query may be automatically reflected in the scope of search for the second query. The scope of search for the second query may further be a combination of a plurality of scopes based on a plurality of user-defined queries.

Unifying Application Launchers And Switchers

US Patent:
8327286, Dec 4, 2012
Filed:
Mar 13, 2008
Appl. No.:
12/047773
Inventors:
Rebecca Jeanette Deutsch - Seattle WA, US
Benjamin Alexander Betz - Redmond WA, US
Stephan Hoefnagels - Seattle WA, US
Chaitanya D. Sareen - Seattle WA, US
Bret P. Anderson - Kirkland WA, US
Robert James Jarrett - Snohomish WA, US
Assignee:
Microsoft Corporation - Redmond WA
International Classification:
G06F 3/048
G06F 9/445
US Classification:
715778, 715781, 715783, 717168, 717174
Abstract:
Embodiments of the invention provide a method, system, and media for intelligently presenting buttons that correspond to running windows as well as a set of application launchers that launch instances of software applications. One version of the method includes receiving an indication that an instance of a software application has been invoked by a launching mechanism, which leads to creating a windowed process in which to present the instance of the software application; determining that at least one of the application launchers was the launching mechanism; automatically removing the launcher(s) from view; and presenting a button that corresponds to the windowed process.

Computer Input Control For Specifying Scope With Explicit Exclusions

View page
US Patent:
8375335, Feb 12, 2013
Filed:
Nov 16, 2009
Appl. No.:
12/619104
Inventors:
Lyon King-Fook Wong - Issaquah WA, US
Stephan Hoefnagels - Seattle WA, US
Timothy P. McKee - Seattle WA, US
Chris J. Guzak - Kirkland WA, US
David G. De Vorchik - Seattle WA, US
Benjamin A. Betz - Redmond WA, US
Assignee:
Microsoft Corporation - Redmond WA
International Classification:
G06F 3/048
US Classification:
715853, 715202, 715210, 715713, 715810, 715854
Abstract:
Methods and systems providing a user interface control allowing a user to specify a scope of items on a computer system or network is disclosed. Certain aspects provide an input control through which a user can specify an explicit scope, or range, of items, while also identifying explicit exclusions from the specified scope, thereby reducing ambiguity regarding identification of items included and items excluded from the scope. When a user explicitly selects an item for inclusion in the scope, the explicitly selected item is added to the scope definition, and all descendants of the explicitly selected item are implicitly selected for inclusion. When a user explicitly selects an item for exclusion from the scope, the explicitly selected item is added to the scope definition as an exclusion from an explicitly included item, and all descendants of the explicitly selected item are implicitly selected for exclusion.

US Patent:
20090199122, Aug 6, 2009
Filed:
Sep 26, 2008
Appl. No.:
12/238459
Inventors:
Rebecca Deutsch - Seattle WA, US
Benjamin Betz - Redmond WA, US
Andrew Jennings - Seattle WA, US
Stephan Hoefnagels - Seattle WA, US
Patrice L. Miner - Kirkland WA, US
Assignee:
MICROSOFT CORPORATION - Redmond WA
International Classification:
G06F 3/00
US Classification:
715771
Abstract:
A computer application launcher can be displayed. In response to receiving a first user input associated with the launcher while a computer application indicated by the launcher is not running, a destination list can be displayed. The destination list can include one or more destinations indicating one or more items that can be performed by a computer application. In response to a second user input associated with the destination list and indicating selection of a destination on the destination list, the application can be launched and instructed to perform an item indicated by the selected destination.

Abstract:
Computer-readable media, computerized methods, and computer systems for generating a destination list from usage data captured at a data store and for rending destinations within a submenu area upon detecting a request from a user. Generating the destination list may involve selecting items from a listing of frequently used items, a listing of recently used items, or any other listing of items compiled internal to an operating system or provided by a target application. Typically, the items are selected according to configuration settings of the destination list. Rendering destinations within the submenu area may involve accessing the destination list by selecting a split button proximate to a presentation of an application launcher. Typically, the destination list references items managed by an application invoked by the application launcher. Destinations retrieved from the destination list are populated into the submenu area based on size characteristics thereof.
