Jul 22, 2004
Appl. No.:
10/897769
Inventors:
Alexis T. Bell - Oakland CA, US
Sudip Mukhopadhyay - Williamsville NY, US
Mark Zerella - Berkeley CA, US
John Glenn Sunley - East Yorkshire, GB
Sander Gaemers - Bishop Burton, GB
Michael James Muskett - Hull, GB
Assignee:
The Regents of the University of California - Oakland CA
BP Chemicals Limited - Middlesex
International Classification:
C07C067/36
C07C051/15
US Classification:
560114, 562550, 562887
Abstract:
Acetyl anhydrides such as acetyl sulfate are produced by a process for comprising contacting methane and carbon dioxide in an anhydrous environment in the presence of effective amounts of a transition metal catalyst and a reaction promoter, and an acid anhydride compound, and optionally an acid. The acetyl anhydride can be contacted with water to produce acetic acid or with an alcohol to produce a product comprising an acetate ester and that may also comprise acetic acid. Optionally, water in stoichiometric amounts or less, with respect to the acetic anhydride, may be fed to a continuous process of this type to produce some acetic acid in situ.

Process For Direct Oxidation Of Methane To Acetic Acid

View page
US Patent:
7009074, Mar 7, 2006
Filed:
Jul 28, 2004
Appl. No.:
10/901643
Inventors:
Mark Zerella - Berkeley CA, US
Sudip Mukhopadhyay - Williamsville NY, US
Alexis T. Bell - Oakland CA, US
John Glenn Sunley - East Yorkshire, GB
Sander Gaemers - Bishop Burton, GB
Philip Howard - East Yorkshire, GB
Brian Ellis - Cottingham, GB
Andrew Richard Lucy - Brough, GB
Assignee:
The Regents of the University of California - Oakland CA
BP Chemicals Limited - Middlesex
International Classification:
C07C 51/14
US Classification:
562522
Abstract:
Acetic acid is produced by oxidation of methane with an oxygen-containing gas in the presence of an acid selected from concentrated sulfuric acid and fuming sulfuric acid, a palladium-containing catalyst and a promoter, preferably a copper or iron salt. The addition of a promoter and Oto a system that includes a palladium-containing catalyst such as PdClincreases the rate of acetic acid formation from methane by more than an order of magnitude as compared with prior art and, in addition, inhibits the precipitation of Pd black.

Process For The Production Of Alkyl Alkoxyacetates

View page
US Patent:
7772423, Aug 10, 2010

Alexis T. Bell - Oakland CA, US
Assignee:
The Regents of the University of California - Oakland CA
International Classification:
C07C 67/36
US Classification:
560232
Abstract:
A process for the production of lower alkyl alkoxyacetates, preferably methyl methoxyacetate, by reaction of a di-(lower alkoxy)methane, preferably dimethoxymethane, with the acid form of a medium-pore or large-pore zeolite catalyst, preferably the acid form of faujasite, ZSM-5, mordenite, or beta, in the gas phase at atmospheric or near-atmospheric pressures.

US Patent:
20070078280, Apr 5, 2007
Filed:
Oct 3, 2005
Appl. No.:
11/242716
Inventors:
Alexis Bell - Oakland CA, US
Mark Zerella - Berkeley CA, US
Argyris Kahros - Woodland Hills CA, US
Assignee:
The Regents of the University of California - Oakland CA
International Classification:
C07C 51/16

Abstract:
Acetic acid or derivatives such as methyl acetate and acetyl sulfate, are produced from methane by contacting a methane-containing feed with an oxygen-containing gas in the presence of a palladium-containing catalyst and an acid selected from concentrated sulfuric acid and fuming sulfuric acid. The process is carried out using an oxygen partial pressure of from about 30 to about 300 psi and most preferably from about 60 to about 200 psi, a methane partial pressure of from about 100 to about 1000 psi, and most preferably from about 100 to about 400 psi, and a total pressure of oxygen and methane of from about 130 to about 1300 psi, preferably from about 200 to about 600 psi. The process is carried out in the absence of a catalyst promoter.

Method For Predicting Adsorbent Performance

View page
US Patent:

Filed:
Mar 9, 2012
Appl. No.:
13/416922
Inventors:
Alexis T. BELL - Berkeley CA, US
Manju Sharma - Berkeley CA, US
Berend Smit - Berkeley CA, US
Alice Zunqing He - San Rafael CA, US
Assignee:
Chevron U.S.A. Inc. - San Ramon CA
The Regents of the University of California - Oakland CA
International Classification:
G06F 7/60
US Classification:
703 2
Abstract:
A method for predicting selective performance of an adsorbent is disclosed. The adsorbent is selected from a list of metals and/or metal cations for use in removing contaminants as thiophene derivatives in hydrocarbon feed. The metals or metal cations are identified from a list having a positive value for E, wherein the metal or metal cation having the largest value for Eis the most selective adsorbent.
