Inventors:
Henry Samueli - San Juan Capistrano CA
Alan Y. Kwentus - Irvine CA
Thomas D. Kwon - Los Angeles CA
Assignee:
Broadcom Corporation - Irvine CA
International Classification:
H04L 2706
US Classification:
375344, 375316, 375321, 375325, 375326
Abstract:
Carrier signals are modulated by information (e. g. , television) signals in a particular frequency range. The information signals are oversampled at a first frequency greater than any of the frequencies in the particular frequency range to provide digital signals at a second frequency. The digital signals are introduced to a carrier recovery loop which provides a feedback to regulate the frequency of the digital signals at the second frequency. The digital signals are introduced to a symbol recovery loop which provides a feedback to maintain the time for the production of the digital signals in the middle of the data signals. The gain of the digital signals is also regulated in a feedback loop. The digital signals are processed to recover the data in the data signals. By providing digital feedbacks, the information recovered from the digital signals can be quite precise.

Fec (Forward Error Correction) Decoder With Dynamic Parameters

View page
US Patent:
7257764, Aug 14, 2007
Filed:
Aug 12, 2004
Appl. No.:
10/916919
Inventors:
Hiroshi Suzuki - Irvine CA, US
Alan Y. Kwentus - San Juan Capistrano CA, US
Stephen Edward Krafft - Los Angeles CA, US
Kevin M. Eddy - Aliso Viejo CA, US
Steven T. Jaffe - Irvine CA, US
Assignee:
Broadcom Corporation - Irvine CA
International Classification:
H03M 13/35
US Classification:
714774, 714776
Abstract:
FEC (Forward Error Correction) decoder with dynamic parameters. A novel means by which FEC parameters may be encoded into, and subsequently extracted from, a signal stream to allow for adaptive changing of any 1 or more operational parameters that govern communications across a communication channel. FEC parameters are encoded directly into a data frame such that the data frame is treated identical to all other data frames within the signal stream. When the data frame actually includes FEC parameters, it is characterized as a CP (Control Packet) type. For example, when decoding an MPEG stream, an MPEG block that includes FEC parameters, that MPEG block is characterized as a CP MPEG block. The means by which FEC parameters are encoded and extracted from the signal stream allows for much easier adaptive modification of the manner by which signal are encoded, modulated, and processed within a communication system.

Multi-Mode Variable Rate Digital Satellite Receiver

US Patent:
7302013, Nov 27, 2007
Filed:
Dec 30, 2003
Appl. No.:
10/747931
Inventors:
Henry Samueli - San Juan Capistrano CA, US
Alan Y. Kwentus - Irvine CA, US
Thomas D. Kwon - Los Angeles CA, US
Assignee:
Broadcom Corporation - Irvine CA
International Classification:
H03K 9/00
US Classification:
375316, 375329, 375261, 375235, 329304
Abstract:
Digital signal processing for television signals includes digital feedback loops. Analog information signals are oversampled to provide digital signals. The digital signals are introduced to a digital carrier recovery loop and a digital symbol recovery loop. The gain of the digital signals is also regulated in a feedback loop. The digital signals are processed to recover the data in the data signals. The use of digital feedback loops allows information recovered from the digital signals to be precise. Carrier signals can be directly demodulated to produce baseband inphase and quadrature signals, or first downconverted to produce intermediate frequency signals.

US Classification:
370322, 370326, 370401, 725111, 725129, 455427
Abstract:
In a DOCSIS based satellite gateway data is transmitted over a single downstream channel, at different throughput rates. Data destined for each subscriber/receiver is assigned a throughput rate depending upon the downstream signal quality of that subscriber/receiver. To accomplish this, the downstream DOCSIS MAC data is parsed to extract DOCSIS packets. The DOCSIS packets are then loaded into packet queues based on an identifier within such packets such as the MAC destination address or SID. Each of the queues represents a bandwidth efficiency or throughput rate that can be currently tolerated by specific subscribers based on the current signal quality being experienced at the subscriber location. A PHY-MAP describing the downstream data structure to be transmitted and inserted into the downstream data. Data is extracted from the packet queues in queue blocks as defined by the PHY-MAP.

Efficient Header Acquisition

View page
US Patent:
7660372, Feb 9, 2010
Filed:
Feb 9, 2005
Appl. No.:
11/054652
Inventors:
Tommy Yu - Anaheim CA, US
Alan Kwentus - Coto de Caza CA, US
Assignee:
Broadcom Corporation - Irvine CA
International Classification:
H03D 3/24
US Classification:
375343, 375241, 37524023, 37524027, 37524021
Abstract:
In an integrated satellite receiver, improved header acquisition techniques are described for quickly locating a header symbol sequence in a data stream substantially implemented on a single CMOS integrated circuit. To identify the location of a header symbol sequence in a data stream, a selected header acquisition technique employs a real time correlator followed by an accumulator. Once accumulation over a predetermined number of frames is finished, the largest or maximum value among the accumulated correlator values is identified. If the maximum value exceeds a threshold, it will be declared as a peak and the address associated is the peak timing.

Filed:
Jul 31, 2002
Appl. No.:
10/208045
Inventors:
Mark Dale - Laguna Hills CA, US
Dorothy Lin - Laguna Beach CA, US
Jen-chieh Chien - Lake Forest CA, US
Alan Gin - Corona Del Mar CA, US
Alan Kwentus - San Juan Capistrano CA, US
David L Hartman - Laguna Hills CA, US

Assignee:
Broadcom Corporation - Irvine CA
International Classification:
H03M 13/03
US Classification:
714786
Abstract:
Methods and systems for modifying DOCSIS-based transmission paths for communication in higher frequency and/or wireless environments, such as wireless terrestrial communication systems and satellite communication systems. An inner turbo-code is combined with a DOCSIS based Reed-Solomon (“RS”) forward error correction (“FEC”) coding scheme, to produce a concatenated turbo-RS code (other FEC codes can be utilized). In phase and quadrature phase (“I-Q”) processing is utilized to enable relatively low cost up-converter implementations. The I-Q processing is preferably performed at baseband, essentially pre-compensating for analog variations in the transmit path. Power amplifier on/off control capable of controlling on/off RF power control of remote transmitters is modulated on a transmit cable to reduce the need for a separate cable.
