Apparatus For Improving The Signal To Noise Ratio In Wireless Communication Systems Through Message Pooling

View page
US Patent:
6353746, Mar 5, 2002
Filed:
Sep 4, 1997
Appl. No.:
08/923792
Inventors:
Joel I. Javitt - Hillside NJ
Assignee:
NCR Corporation - Dayton OH
International Classification:
H04B 138
US Classification:
455550, 455566, 340 591
Abstract:
Apparatus for improving the signal to noise ratio in wireless communication systems through message pooling including hardware, software and protocol contained within a packet data communication system which enables a wireless communication system, for example an electronic display system, to adapt communication techniques to meet customer based accuracy requirements independent of changes in the signal to noise ratio of the communication channel and methods of using the same. Communication having low signal to noise ratios are improved using intelligent retransmissions of the communication signals and statistical detection or demodulation. Such techniques are particularly useful when used in wireless communication in unbalanced systems, such as electronic display systems.

Transceiver Positioning In Free-Space Optical Networks

View page
US Patent:
6381055, Apr 30, 2002
Filed:
Apr 16, 1998
Appl. No.:
09/061534
Inventors:
Joel I. Javitt - Hillside NJ
Christopher Lee Rutledge - Somerset NJ
Assignee:
ATT Corp. - New York NY
International Classification:
H04B 1000
US Classification:
359159, 359152, 359169, 359170
Abstract:
Methods and apparatus for safe and reliable telecommunication using a telecommunication network that employs substantially unguided, free-space, point-to-point, electro-magnetic radiation are provided. Most methods include the use of a retro-reflector near a transceiver assembly. The retro-reflector can be used to rapidly calibrate, align, and/or realign one or more assemblies by reflecting a beam of light back toward its source, providing an opportunity for optical detection of the reflected beam.

Abstract:
A method for communicating data in a wireless communications system having a base station communicating to at least one of a plurality of terminals over a set of carrier frequencies, the method comprising periodically monitoring the carrier energy level of each said carrier frequency received at a given terminal to identify a list of optimal frequencies over which the carrier energy level is strong enough to maintain a viable transmission from said base station to said given terminal, wherein said viable transmission provides a given coding gain; and simultaneously transmitting a given set of packet data from said base station to said given terminal over a plurality of frequencies from said list of optimal frequencies identified for said given terminal.

Method For Dynamic Allocation Of Voice And Image Compression

View page
US Patent:
59264837, Jul 20, 1999
Filed:
Nov 6, 1996
Appl. No.:
8/744297
Inventors:
Joel I. Javitt - Hillside NJ
Assignee:
AT&T Corp - Middletown NJ
International Classification:
H04J 314
US Classification:
370477
Abstract:
A communications system providing a means for dynamically controlling system performance during times when communications traffic substantially changes to prevent blocking service while maintaining communications quality. The communications system provides such dynamic control for voice and/or video communications. For example, a voice communications system according to the present invention provides a means for increasing the effective voice capacity during times of increased voice traffic in a given service area, and decreasing the effective voice capacity during time of decreased voice traffic, wherein the decrease in the effective voice capacity provides an increase in voice quality. In one illustrative embodiment, when the voice traffic increases to a given threshold level, the system implements speech compression on selected channels to increase the effective capacity to that service area. In another embodiment, the system combines two compressed channel into one to increase the effective capacity even further.

Network-Controlled Reference Frequency Generator

View page
US Patent:
55598420, Sep 24, 1996
Filed:
Mar 30, 1994
Appl. No.:
8/220351
Inventors:
Joel I. Javitt - Hillside NJ
Assignee:
Lucent Technologies Inc. - Murray Hill NJ
International Classification:
H03D 324
US Classification:
375376
Abstract:
A reference frequency generator is described which obtains its frequency accuracy from the network timing signal available on the public switched telephone network. A digital logic array compares the output of an oven-controlled crystal oscillator to the network timing signal in order to develop digital samples, the values of which represent the differences in frequency between the network timing signal and the output of the oscillator. A frequency error is computed in a processor by comparing each digital sample to an expected value. The frequency error is stored in a data set only if it is less than a predetermined threshold level, thereby immediately excluding samples which may be generated during an outage or impairment of the transmission system which delivers the network timing signal. The data set is used to compute a statistical best estimate of the frequency error, and this best estimate is then used to generate a voltage which is applied to a frequency-controlling input of the oven-controlled crystal oscillator.
