Method For Operation Of Automated Top Head And Stem Guide Assembly For Coking Drums

View page
US Patent:
52599302, Nov 9, 1993
Filed:
Nov 6, 1991
Appl. No.:
7/788694
Inventors:
Richard J. Barker - Diamond Bar CA
Frank A. DiGiacomo - Morris Plains NJ
James M. Hardy - Garden Grove CA
Robert F. Lamm - Westminister CA
Allen S. Malsbury - Parsippany NJ
Assignee:
Atlantic Richfield Company - Los Angeles CA
International Classification:
C10B 3300
US Classification:
201 2
Abstract:
An automated top head cover and stem guide assembly adapted for covering a top opening in vertical vessels such as coking drums, and a method for remotely operating the assembly. The top head assembly includes a flanged connector unit attached pressure-tightly to a top flange opening of a coking drum and a top cover device including a cover unit pivotally attached to the flanged connector unit, so that the cover unit can be pivotally lifted and moved aside. A stem guide device is also pivotally attached to the top flange unit, so that a stem guide unit can be pivotally moved downwardly into place over the top flange unit opening, after a stem member is inserted into the vessel. Following coke removal from the drum, the stem member is withdrawn, the stem guide unit is pivotally moved upwardly, and the head cover unit is moved downwardly to cover the coking drum flanged unit. The invention also discloses method steps for operating the head cover and stem guide devices of the assembly.

Engine Intake Temperature Control System

View page
US Patent:
50366688, Aug 6, 1991
Filed:
Jul 3, 1990
Appl. No.:
7/547666
Inventors:
James A. Hardy - Playa Del Rey CA
Assignee:
Allied-Signal Inc. - Morristown NJ
International Classification:
F02B 2900
US Classification:
60599
Abstract:
A combustion air induction system for an internal combustion engine equipped with a turbocharger to provide charge air to the engine includes a pair of heat exchangers arranged in series in the conduit communicating the charge air outlet of the turbocharger to the induction manifold of the engine. Charge air from the turbocharger first travels through a charge air to engine coolant heat exchanger, and then travels through a charge air to ambient air heat exchanger. A bypass passage is controlled by a valve to bypass charge air around the charge air to ambient air heat exchanger under predetermined conditions.

Highly Accurate Three-Dimensional Surface Digitizing System And Methods

View page
US Patent:
60521902, Apr 18, 2000
Filed:
Sep 9, 1997
Appl. No.:
8/925628
Inventors:
Marek Sekowski - Tarzana CA
Thomas Summers - Los Lunas NM
James M. Hardy - Albuquerque NM
Assignee:
Utoptics, Inc. - Tarzana CA
International Classification:
G01B 1124
US Classification:
356376
Abstract:
A distance-measuring system includes a light source for transmitting a beam of light to a target, thereby generating a received beam. A calibration unit periodically calibrates the system by positioning a calibration target between the light source and the target so that the transmitted beam is interrupted, thereby generating a received calibration beam. The calibration unit also generates a calibration signal which is indicative of when the calibration target is generating the received calibration beam. A target sensor receives the reflected target and calibration beams and provides a target signal indicative of the reflected target and calibration beams. A reference sensor receives light from the light source and provides a reference signal to the processing circuitry. Processing circuitry receives the calibration, target, and reference signals and calculates the distance to the target based upon the target and reference signals and/or calibrates the system based upon the calibration signal. The processing circuitry may provide data based upon the calibration and target signals to a computer for distance calculations and calibration.

Diesel Engine Particulate Trap Regeneration System

View page
US Patent:
48359637, Jun 6, 1989
Filed:
Aug 28, 1986
Appl. No.:
6/901483
Inventors:
James A. Hardy - Playa Del Rey CA
Assignee:
Allied-Signal Inc. - Morristown NJ
International Classification:
F01N 302
F02B 3700
F02D 906
US Classification:
60274
Abstract:
A diesel engine exhaust particulate trap and regeneration system for trapping of particulates in the engine gases and periodic burning thereof is disclosed. Collected particulates are burned in the trap by increasing the trap temperature utilizing a backpressure valve in the exhaust gas line. A microprocessor, which receives engine operating parameters via sensors, compares the sensed parameter valves to engine maps stored in its memory and opens or closes the valve via an actuator in response thereto.

US Patent:
46778233, Jul 7, 1987
Filed:
Nov 1, 1985
Appl. No.:
6/794346
Inventors:
James A. Hardy - Playa Del Rey CA
Assignee:
The Garrett Corporation - Los Angeles CA
International Classification:
F01N 302
US Classification:
60274
Abstract:
A diesel engine exhaust particulate trap and regeneration system for trapping of particulates in the engine exhaust gases and periodic burning thereof. Collected particulates in the trap are burned utilizing a burner means immediately upstream of the trap. An air and fuel supply system are associated with the burner which controls the combustion temperature within the burner in order to completely and efficiently burn the particulates.

Control System For Diesel Particulate Trap Regeneration System

View page
US Patent:
50503766, Sep 24, 1991
Filed:
Feb 8, 1990
Appl. No.:
7/477019
Inventors:
Paul M. Stiglic - Torrance CA
Brian C. Gabelman - Los Angeles CA
James A. Hardy - Playa Del Rey CA
Assignee:
Allied-Signal Inc. - Morristown NJ
International Classification:
F01N 302
US Classification:
60274
Abstract:
A control system for regenerating a particulate trap in the exhaust system of a diesel engine includes control logic which controls the air/fuel ratio of the engine by operating a backpressure valve in the engine exhaust system to provide a proper amount of excess oxygen to permit efficient combustion of the particulate content of the trap, but to avoid rapid and damaging combustion rates. Actual engine air/fuel ratio is compared to a commanded air/fuel ratio, and the position of the backpressure valve is adjusted accordingly. The commanded air/fuel ratio is ratcheted upwardly or downwardly once in a predetermined time period in response to a temperature error signal between exhaust gas temperature sensed in the engine exhaust manifold and a predetermined commanded temperature. An override is provided to permit the vehicle operator to override regeneration when power is required from the engine, and a low power cut-off is provided to suspend regeneration when the engine is operated for a period of time at low power conditions where regeneration is inefficient.
